Democrat kicks off campaign for Ala. Supreme Court: Christian, pro-life
Russell County Circuit Judge Al Johnson kicked off his campaign for a state Supreme Court seat Tuesday with a promise to stand up for "everyday folks" and not be a candidate of trial lawyers or business interests.

"I'm a Christian, and proud of it. I own a gun, and I hunt with it. I'm pro-life, pro-death penalty and against gay marriage. And yes, I'm a Democrat," Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson, who announced in August that he was a Democratic candidate for the seat now held by Justice Lyn Stuart, a Republican seeking re-election, kicked off his campaign at the state judicial building.

"There's an old Jerry Reed song that says, `she got the gold mine, and I got the shaft.' Well in Alabama courtrooms it's been the special interests that have gotten the gold mine and everyday folks who have gotten the shaft," Johnson said.

1. Well, it's Alabama
I guess I'd rather have this guy on the bench than some grandstanding idiot like Roy Moore.

2. "Pro-life and pro-death penalty"
A bizarre mental pretzel twist, to say the least.

4. Sounds like a flipflop to me
How can you be pro-life (favorable to life) and than be for the death penalty? I mean hello. Does anyone else not get this connection besides me?

8. People on death row
have been convicted of heinous crimes. Fetuses are innocent. That is how it has been explained to me, though it is not my view.

11. Not all fetuses are innocent. What about those black fetuses that
some right-wing radio commentator was complaining about? Didn't he say we needed to kill black fetuses to reduce the crime rate? I didn't know black babies were so dangerous. Don't sound to me like all those fetuses are innocent. :sarcasm:

18. I agree with you totally
I was just being my obstinate sarcastic self.

The Chimp and his gang of thugs probably use the term negro in their private conversations

6. Only a true Christian like he claims to be can rationalize those
concepts together into a single philosophy!

3. Am I the only one disturbed by a judge making campaign promises?
Seriously...we shouldn't be voting on Supreme Court Justices.

5. Welcome to Jesusland
All our justices are elected here. They all have to make silly pledges to uphold "traditional values" and crap like intelligent design.

It's pretty much a judiciary of Ayatollahs.

17. Get used to it on the federal level as well
In the past 25 years we have only had the whitehouse for 8 of them. At this rate the republican will pick all the judges. We have to run a winning candidate in 2008.

7. You should have seen the last judicial race in southern Illinois
These two judges were running some of the most negative ads I have seen in a while. One accused the other of being a pedophile sympathizer. The other judge said the first was a paid tool of health insurance companies. These ads were constantly on the air with massive ad buys in the St. Louis media market.

10. Pro--life and pro-death, wow what a hypocrite. I can't believe he said
those two phrases back to back without thinking about it first.

15. If you believe that abortion is murder, then no, it isn't
If you believe that a fetus is not a human being but instead something that might become a human being, then the answer is yes, being pro-life and pro-death penalty takes some interesting rationalizations.

Since we can't can't concusively answer the question of whether or not a fetus is a human life or not, we leave it up to the pregnant woman to decide. Hence the phrase "choice."

Interesting question you asked, though, and certainly illuminates how a lot of my RW friends and family must think of me.

16. The arguement is 'innocent life' as opposed to a murderer's life
The problem is that many believe that the fetus is a life. I have no idea is that is the case, thus my ambiguity on the abortion issue.
