A billboard criticizing Rep. Jean Schmidt for a speech she gave on the floor of the U.S. House has spurred a political squabble of its own.
The Democratic National Committee last week tried to buy a billboard in Portsmouth and one in Cincinnati criticizing Schmidt, R-Loveland, for her speech implying a congressional colleague was a coward for wanting to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. She later apologized and withdrew the remarks.
The Democrats' plan was stymied when the Lamar Advertising Co., which owns the billboards, rejected the proposed ad, saying it was too negative. It has since tempered its decision, but Democrats have not been mollified.
"Shame on You Jean Schmidt," the proposed billboard read. "Stop Attacking Veterans. Keep your Eye on the Ball — We Need a Real Plan for Iraq."
