CNN/AP: Girl's life support in court's hands
Girl's life support in court's hands
Stepfather accused of beating her wants parental rights
Tuesday, December 6, 2005

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A man accused of beating his stepdaughter tried Tuesday to convince skeptical justices on the state's highest court that he should have a say in whether the comatose 11-year-old is removed from life support.

Jason Strickland, who could face a murder charge if Haleigh Poutre dies, wants the seven-member Supreme Judicial Court to overturn a juvenile court judge's decision that he has no parental rights over the girl, who is now in state custody....

***

Haleigh was hospitalized in September with severe brain injuries. Police say she had been beaten by Strickland and his wife, Holli.

Less than two weeks after the couple was charged, Holli Strickland -- the girl's aunt and adoptive mother -- was found dead beside her grandmother in a possible murder-suicide.

A juvenile court judge granted a request from the state Department of Social Services in September to disconnect Haleigh's ventilator and feeding tube....

12. Because the legal system in this country
And actually most western nations, still considers children to be the property of their parents (well, really just the father), who have the ultimate right to do whatever the hell they want to them.

2. This is just tragic
The little girl's mother gave her to the aunt when the girl was 6. The aunt adopted her, the mother moved away with a boyfriend. The aunt married this guy and then they beat the girl into a coma. Seems to me there wasn't alot of hope for a good outcome with this kind of family circumstance. Just tragic. I wonder where the mother is now and why she hasn't bothered to show back up.

9. The mother was on
a show this morning (saw a clip while getting my son ready for school) however, I still haven't heard why she gave up her parental rights to this little girl to start with. She did say that she believes her daughter should be at "rest" and that the way she is now is not living. But legally, what she thinks means sqwat.

6. timing is there for one
Congress will be going on holiday break soon - so Frist can call a last-minute session

bush* will probably be in crawford for the holidays - so he can fly to DC to sign papers

my guess is that it will be a Christmas eve flight - hope santa knows enough to stay well away from air-farce one flight path

7. I think that's one reason this story is getting media attention --
the similarity to Schiavo.

Thanks for posting, miles55, and welcome to DU!

11. Except this girl is on a ventilator
so she's apparently not able to breath on her own.
