Rumsfeld questions policy on preventing Iraqi abuse of detainees
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has questioned a policy that requires US military personnel who witness abuse of detainees in Iraqi custody to take "all reasonable actions" to stop or prevent it, a spokesman said.

Rumsfeld seemed taken aback last month when General Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, told him at a news conference that all US military personnel had the responsibility to try to stop abuse that they witness.

Since then, Rumsfeld has raised questions about the policy, said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

He indicated that a key question is what happens when a permanent, sovereign government is formed in Iraq following elections December 15.

"Our forces are in a sovereign nation and the law enforcement of that nation is the responsibility of that country," Whitman said.

At the same time, he said, "This is a new democracy. We know that this is tough stuff, and it's a change, a dramatic change from the way things were done in the past."

1. He Really is Nuts, Isn't He?
These people are about to drive me to the end of my rope.

"What, we have a responsibility to stop torture? How can that be? How can we stop torture if we're torturing people? Do I think that's quite the conundrum? Why yes I do. What's that General Pace?..."

He's a full blown loon.

2. WTF
So, wasn't Iraq a sovereign country before the invasion? I thought the rationale of the day was that Saddam was a bad person and we had to take him out to protect the population.

Apparently not. Maybe Rummy didn't get the memo :eyes:

3. "Am I starting to feel a little punch-drunk?"

"Yes. Am I simply filling the air-wave-space until I can frantically scrape together what's left of my poor addled brain to spin this right? Possibly. Can I think of the answer to this next question I'm now asking myself? Perhaps. Yes. No. Ask again later. It is certain."

WhirwhirwhirCLUNK.

4. Why wouldn't he question it?
RumsFailed DIGS torture. If someone were to ask him, point blank: "Mr. Secretary, do you enjoy watching people get tortured by our troops?"

He would stop suddenly, at the boldness of the question. He would sit still, and the corners of his mouth would turn, slowly upward...

His eyes would get a glassy gleam, at the thought of killing Iraqis....lots of them.

"Yes"

7. "We don't torture." GW Bush
Amerika oustsources torture. Iraqis don't seem to be squimish about torturing their prisoners so this task gets turned over to them. Then the Neocon Regime can say "We don't torture." Same thing occured in Vietnam. Americans stood by while detainees were being tortured.
