Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been admitted to hospital.Baroness Thatcher was taken to a London hospital after "feeling faint", a spokesman for the Conservative Party said.Known as the Iron Lady, she will be kept in the Chelsea and Westminster hospital overnight but is likely to be released in the morning.

Baroness Thatcher recently celebrated her 80th birthday at a London hotel, where she appeared frail.

Her health has been failing since the death of her husband Denis.

She should be put out to pasture.

I remember what she did to the working class--busting unions as she did, doing nothing to ease racial tensions in Britain at the time as well. That being said, could somebody help to clarify why she deserves such vitriol?

I suppose I have some respect for her because she, like WJC, started out as a working-class child and raised herself to the heights of political power. The fact that she is a woman adds to that success story.

I remember when she and Ronnie stood side-by-side to eliminate the social safety nets in the US and UK and I saw her as the enemy. Could somebody remind me why? I guess the current political problems in both countries seem to dwarf the damage done twenty years ago, making Ron and Maggie look less horrible in retrospect.

It's not even about policies, although they wreaked havoc. It's about the fact that she destroyed public morals. She ushered in an age where looking out for no 1 was seen as a virtue, where the poor deserved it and where excess was a triumph. I wouldn't really say she came from working class roots either. Lower middle class, perhaps. And even if she did, better off poor than evil.

Are you joking? We've got a minimum wage now. We've got 4.8% unemployment. People on the dole can survive. Blair's a liar and an arrogant shit, but he isn't in the same league as Thatcher.

Actually, I would like to know more. No, I was not joking, but perhaps that is because from an American p.o.v. things are much worse today than they were twenty years ago. Also, does the U.K. really only have 4.8% unemployment? I did not know that; if those figures are correct (not being fudged), the U.K. really has come a long ways since the early 80's.

We also have power every night, and the bins get emptied.

The country wasn't in such great shape when Labour was elected out in 1979 either.

Freepers have indeed said some really blackhearted things about our leaders. And that is exactly why I find this thread about Thatcher's hopitalization so reprehensible. For God's sake, why the hell are we following the lead of Freepers? Why are we engaging in the same blackhearted behavior that we criticize Freepers for engaging in? Just to get back at them? Screw that. Why don't we try to set the standard instead of following the standard set by the neanderthals?

Furthermore, if the goal is to prove that Margret Thatcher is herself blackhearted, then the worst way to go about that is to say blackhearted things about her.

Pardon me, but I think it unlikely that anyone "over there" would be at all interested in any politeness shown by anyone "over here" towards THAT particular woman.

If you seek to bridge a gap between FR and DU by accusing DUers of being "reprehensible" you might attempt something similar on FR when they wish death on Cindy Sheehan or whoever it is they choose next and see how far you get.

I think it highly unlikely that anyone over here is following the "Freeperland lead". It seems more reasonable to me that the reaction is genuine and comes from an understanding of Thatcher's policy rather than some lock-step game with FR, whose opinions don't really feature here much other than as mockery-fodder, which, given your high post-count, I'm sure you know better than I.
