Bush lacks credibility on Iraq, Murtha says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Support for the war in Iraq is being undermined by a lack of credibility among top Bush administration officials, including the president himself, a leading Democratic congressman who advocates a U.S. withdrawal said Wednesday.

"I've seen damn little things that they have said was true turned out to be true," said Rep. John Murtha, a veteran Pennsylvania congressman and a retired Marine colonel. "That's my problem."

President Bush said Wednesday that Iraqis have made "quiet, steady progress" on economic, political and security issues during the two years of war.

But Murtha told reporters, "I don't see the kind of progress he sees." He said Iraqi electricity and oil production still lag behind prewar levels, and billions in reconstruction funds remain unspent.

Murtha is the ranking Democrat on the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee, and he voted to authorize the 2003 invasion of Iraq. But he shook up Washington in November when he called for a swift U.S. withdrawal, arguing that the presence of American troops is only making the conflict worse. (Posted 3:35 p.m.)

17. That is the one message that will work for us
Its 100% true, we can all agree on it, and its not going expose anyone to ridicule for saying it.

Even the most frightful Dem should at least be able to find the courage to say this.

19. Anti-War Congressman Still Making News
Anti-War Congressman Still Making News

Thursday December 8, 2005 9:01 AM

By KIMBERLY HEFLING
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. John Murtha's stock is rising in the Democratic Party right alongside his public profile.

The once-camera-shy Vietnam veteran who rattled Washington last month by calling for the removal of troops from Iraq seems to be popping up everywhere, making TV appearances and being cited by reporters as a leading Democratic opponent of President Bush's war policy.

On Wednesday he delivered the House Democrats' response to Bush's speech on the war. He appeared paternal as he chastised the administration's plans for Iraq, even rhetorically asking of the president, ``What has he said that would give him credibility?''

Murtha, 73, of Johnstown, Pa., made headlines last week when he appeared at a fundraiser in Boston for the opponent of Texas Rep. Tom DeLay, the indicted former House majority leader, and he's become a darling of the morning television talk shows.

23. &Murtha has credibility 'cuz he is a hawk. He is IN with The Brass &Boeing
The goddamned Pentagon brass spit on Congress members who dare to question their endless expenditures. The only reason Murtha could get to say this is because he bought connections with the Pentagon Generals and Admirals using our tax dollars. He was their man to cry to when they realized that republicanism was fucking up their precious war machine.

Mister Kucinich and Miz Kinney will never have such access to the military, though they have been looking out for them for three years. Who was it who insisted that troops get body armor? It wasn't the republicans.

We are not represented. God damn this country.

22. So, one statement against this war, and
a hawk is labeled as "anti-war" . . . despite initially supporting it, right?
