1. So what are these Crips? Some sort of human rights organization?
Labor group? Association for political activism?

A writer and nobel prize nominee would be honored for the founding of outstanding organizations such as this, yes?

4. I can't tell if you being facetious, or if you really do not know
what or who the crips are?

Anyway, my biggest beef with the Death Penalty is that there are too many (and, no, I don't know how many) innocent people on Death Row.

Mr. Tookie Williams has admitted to murdering these people so I have no problem with capital punishment in his case.

Yes, 20 years after the crimes, he's a Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner now, but his victims are still just as dead.

5. I'm drawing attention to how this guy's made out to be Mandela.
Like the Crips were some equivalent of the African National Congress and not a bloody gang with one foot in street terror and the other in organized crime. You'd never know from reading the rest of the piece... I can only imagine what people who really don't know what the Crips are would think. (Probably, that this is a political prisoner being executed for defying the Powers That Be.)

7. Seriously,
In addition to outright murder, how much did he poison his community via gang recruitment, drug use, depressed property values, you name it.

12. I concur.
Let me put it another way: If George W. Bush were to check himself into prison, become re-born again, and suddenly develop a grasp of the English language, would that somehow mitigate the crimes for which he is responsible? Hell, no!

Now, I agree that putting Tookie Williams to death isn't going to make his victims magically spring from the grave, but for goodness sake, this guy has committed crimes for which he can never atone!

Isn't it possible to concede his crimes and simply ask for a little bit of mercy, rather than making him out to be some sort of victimized saint?

13. Distortion... he called starting the Crips the worst mistake...
of his life.

One that he works to reverse the damage done everyday.

6. Ok, from a moral aspect we could debate capital punishment ad nauseum..
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 04:59 PM by wake.up.america
But from a practical aspect: Killing a killer does exactly what?

The people who kill killers become killers.

Does it hinder people from killing? No!!!

Never heard of a killer say, " Boy had I known I would sit in Death Row, I would not have killed."

28. You're right
Most killers have the attitude that they won't get caught. So they're not deterred by the crime or punishment.

This one got caught and deserves to be put to death. The victims family deserves as much.

His legacy will be death and destruction long after he's gone.

10. stop repeating false information
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/11/21/MNGUFFRRP11.DTL

"Williams has never admitted guilt for the crimes he was convicted of: the murders of Albert Owens, Yen-I Yang, Tsai-Shai Yang and Yee-Chen Lin during two separate robberies in 1979. His petition for clemency briefly alleges that evidence against Williams was circumstantial and that African Americans were kept off the jury that convicted him of four murders."

and this
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/12/07/MNG60G468I1.DTL

"Williams has maintained his innocence since the 1981 trial that sent him to death row, but he has been unable to produce the type of evidence that has led to exonerations in other cases -- DNA, a rock-solid alibi, recanting witnesses or a third-party confession."

we need to make sure of our facts - I myself am against the death penalty - in horrific crimes I think it is too easy a way out - plus it dehumanizes all of us

21. Thanks nofurylike for keeping us informed, you have

given us much to think about and much to learn about the criminal "justice" system.

I am sure that the posters in this thread will continue to have stong opinions.

I certainly hope that the tone will reflect our ability to be civil.

Bravo for your continued efforts to help us grow as citizens of America The Beautiful....."and shine they good on brotherhood from sea to shining sea."

24. Creating more
They really shouldn't kill Tookie, that will just cause more of them to be created right? Death is no deterrent, he was just born that way. The victims families should have no say in the matter because they are biased in a particular direction. I would feel really good about myself if I could stop his execution, and that's all that really matters in the end.
