Schwarzenegger to hear last appeal on gang leader
Schwarzenegger to hear last appeal on gang leader

By Adam Tanner 1 hour, 49 minutes ago

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a clemency hearing on condemned
Crips gang co-founder Stanley Tookie Williams on Thursday before he makes one of the most
anticipated decisions of his administration.

Williams, 51, murdered a store clerk and a family running a motel in separate 1979 robberies.
After 24 years in prison, he is set to be executed by lethal injection next Thursday at San Quentin
prison north of San Francisco.

During a 60-minute session behind closed doors, his lawyers will make an unusual argument in asking
Schwarzenegger to commute Williams' sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Rather than repeat arguments, which have failed in court, that Williams is innocent, his lawyers are
making an appeal that he is worth more alive than dead because of his work in urging youths to avoid
gangs.

2. He never won the Noble Prize
He was nominted for the prize, but then again, so was Adolf Hitler.

4. and George Bush
being nominated means nothing, thanks to those that nominate people they know don't qualify just to dress up and evil person.

I don't believe in the death penalty but I don't believe this guy has changed either - he's a good manipulator not a good person.

6. I'm on the same page as you
I'm against the death penalty under any circumstances so Williams should be spared. But why is this guy the person everyone wants to go to bat for? He has never admitted to any crimes, much less the ones he is on death row for. He has only taken the position that he was once a "bad guy". Well, how about a simple apology to anyone you have either robbed, murdered, raped, or assaulted? Instead, he gives the people a children's book. WTF? He is all about himself and doesn't warrant the time or effort.

8. Some people are willing to 'stretch' the truth if it
furthers their cause.

7. I've changed my mind, I think he will not commute this sentence.
He wants to soothe the rightists who are in a tizzy about his naming of a lesbian Democrat who is in a same-sex marriage to be his chief of staff. I think that it won't work. IF he does commute the sentence, there will be holy hell. It certainly won't win him any points on the left, since it's clear that he's a corporate whore intent on destroying the labor movement and attacking teachers and nurses.
