Portland (ME) school board adopts policy to limit military recruiters
PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland School Committee has adopted a policy that limits military and college recruiters to no more than seven visits a year to the city´s public high schools.

The policy, thought to be the first of its kind in Maine, comes as school districts nationwide are debating whether to limit military recruitment amid reports of aggressive tactics by some recruiters. The committee adopted the Equitable Recruitment Access Policy by a 6-3 vote Wednesday.

"All sorts of folks are competing for our children´s commitment," said Stephen Spring, head of the subcommittee that drafted the policy.

The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires schools that receive federal funding to provide military recruiters the same access to students that college and job recruiters receive. It also requires schools to release students´ contact information to military recruiters unless a student requests in writing that the information be kept private.

Here's the letter of the month (from Tuesday's paper)

"Protecting student privacy" as the reason given to limit military recruiting by the Portland School Committee doesn't pass the straight-face test.

Based on past behavior and statements, the school committee is clearly dominated by committed leftists and anti-war activists.

I don't think it is a stretch to say that this is a way to lash out at the president and the war in Iraq at the local level.

The left can't win national elections, so they will take it out on the outstanding and patriotic men and women of the military who symbolize all they detest.

It's obvious where this is heading: an America where blue staters, like spoiled third-graders, act up and exercise in the most obnoxious way the freedoms that are won by the sacrifice and hardship of those who live in red states.

Perhaps Bill Ho'Reilly will call for another terror attack but just not as destructive as the one that he wants on San Francisco.
