A state lawyer has urged a federal appeals court to strike down a preliminary injunction that stops Ohio officials from controlling how doctors prescribe RU-486 abortion pills.
Ohio Assistant Attorney General Anne Berry Strait argued at a hearing Wednesday that the state should be permitted to enforce a 2004 state law that prohibits the use of RU-486 beyond the seventh week of pregnancy.
Strait told a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals the measure is designed to protect women's health. She said it does not prevent women from obtaining abortions.
.......
So far, Ohio is the only state that has adopted a seven-week limit on RU-486, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000 after being developed in France. Across the United States, about 400,000 women have used the drug since its introduction.
