U.S. Military Probing Video Of Road Violence
British Contractors Appear To Shoot at Iraqi Civilians

BAGHDAD, Dec. 8 -- A silver Mercedes swings into the passing lane when a machine gun opens fire, sending the car smashing into a taxi, whose terrified occupants scatter. Moments later, in a video posted on the Internet and apparently recorded in Iraq, a white sedan is riddled with bullets as it accelerates on an open highway.

Framed as if on a movie screen by the outline of a sport-utility vehicle's rear window, those scenes and others show what appear to be private security contractors firing on Iraqi civilians. The video footage has prompted an investigation by the U.S. military, a spokesman said Thursday, and by the company linked to the incidents. It even has a soundtrack: Elvis Presley's upbeat "Mystery Train."

Details about the origin of the video clip and the location shown in it are unknown. It was originally posted last month on a Web site maintained by former employees of Aegis Specialist Risk Management, a London-based company that has a $293 million U.S. government contract to provide security services in Iraq. The video has since been removed from the site.

"Aegis has established a formal board of enquiry, in cooperation with the U.S. military authorities, to investigate whether the footage has any connection with the company and, should this prove to be the case, under what circumstances any incident took place," the company said in a statement about the incident.

4. U.S. Investigates Iraq Car-Shooting Video
By ELENA BECATOROS Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The U.S. military is investigating a video clip that appeared on the Internet purporting to show Western security contractors firing at Iraqi civilian vehicles, a spokesman said Thursday.

The video has appeared on a Web site informally linked to London-based Aegis Defense Services Ltd., one of the biggest private security contractors in Iraq.

The words "Aegis PSD" appear in the clips, which seem to have been filmed out of the back of a vehicle traveling down a busy road, apparently carrying contractors. Sprays of gunfire, apparently from the vehicle, are seen hitting the road behind the vehicle, with cars swerving to avoid the fire. At one point, a car crashes after being hit by bullets.

The clip is set with a soundtrack of Elvis Presley's song "Mystery Train." No contractors appear in the video and the exact source of the gunfire can't be seen.

5. at several points cars come to a stop and crash
and these are people just trying to get home and feed their kids. They don't care about America or Iraq or christians or republicans or anything but just trying to live and see tomorrow and hope their children grow up in a better life than they have now, and we're shooting them for fun.

I can't imagine the hatred someone who actually believes in the "liberation" must feel when their father or mother or child is murdered by an American yahoo trophy shooting in traffic, somebody who might have been on our side last week.

This is beyond evil. These are people trying to cooperate, trying to believe the crap we preach, and trying to get home to feed their kids and we're shooting them for kicks. They don't distinguish between good americans and bad americans any more than we distinguish between bad nazis and good nazis.

I recommend we give those contractors directly to the Iraqi courts for justice. It's the only way to prove we're serious about their autonomy.

6. They SHOULD be welcoming us with flowers and hugs soon...
How can any Iraqi not view the actions of these idiots as evidence they have not been liberated, but occupied by madmen? If the West wants to make a first step toward withdrawal of forces, the place to begin is with mercenary/security contractors.

Despite Shrub's glowing progress reports, the place is a madhouse of unpredictable violence, growing worse each day. Trying to maintain a semblance of control over criminal freelancers shouldn't be a burden for the US military or taxpayers, much less for the innocent citizens of Iraq. We do not need a Mi Lai massacre mentality at work in Iraq!

Those responsible for the atrocity and the video appear to be employed by the London firm Aegis Defense Services Ltd., "one of the biggest private security contractors in Iraq."
