House GOP support growing for picking new majority leader

WASHINGTON - Two leading moderate House Republicans told reporters Thursday that the House should elect a new majority leader to replace Rep. Tom DeLay.

Chris Shays of Connecticut and Sherwood Boehlert of New York joined a handful of conservative Republicans who have said they want an election, which would have the effect of permanently removing DeLay from the leadership. One of them, Jeff Flake of Arizona, said Thursday that he "may represent the silent majority" that could gradually go public with the same sentiment.

DeLay, R-Sugar Land, had to step aside as majority leader, the No. 2 position in the chamber, when a Travis County grand jury indicted him in September and October on charges related to campaign finances. advertisement

GOP Rep. Dan Lungren of California, of the conservative Republican Study Committee, said the temporary leadership structure created after DeLay's indictment can't last.

2. The sharks smell blood
They've been circling DeLay for some time, but weren't sure that the indictments would stick. Apparently they've decided that since there are still two counts against him, he's likely to get convicted-or the trial will drag out and taint the entire GOP. Mostly, though, I think there are others who are thirsty for power.

3. Aww...
I so wanted to see them delay the start of business in 2006 while bugman was on trial. It'd be like handing us the '06 election in a gold basket full of gin and hookers.

7. Dan Lungren is a p.o.s.
All these "conservative Republicans" are careerists who are sniffing for power. They'll stab their friends in the heart at the drop of a hat.

8. Stay and fight, Tommy! Were behind you and your cause.
We want to watch you drag your party down the sewer. The more noise you make the dumber you look.

The more you fight the faster your party falls..............
