WP: Carlyle Group Bidding On (Dunkin' Donuts)
Carlyle Bidding On Food Chains
Deal Would Be A First for Firm
By Terence O'Hara
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, December 9, 2005; Page D01

The Carlyle Group is among the final bidders for the Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins restaurant chains, in what would be the first U.S. consumer retail investment for a company built around its expertise in defense, aerospace and telecommunications.

Carlyle has been eyeing Dunkin' Brands Inc. since this summer and has joined with Thomas H. Lee Partners LP and Bain Capital LLC, both of Boston, to submit a bid for the French-owned food chains, according to two sources familiar with the bid who spoke on condition of anonymity because the bidding process is supposed to remain private.

Groups headed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and by J.P. Morgan Partners have also made bids for the company, which is expected to draw a price of about $2 billion, the sources said.

The auction for Dunkin' Brands comes at the end of a record-setting year for private equity deals.

In the first three quarters of the year, more than 200 private partnerships had raised more than $100 billion to buy companies, eclipsing the previous year-long record of $65.4 billion, set in 2004, according to Buyouts magazine. Washington-based Carlyle and New York's Blackstone Group LP each raised more than $10 billion in buyout funds this year. Investors in the funds include pensions, endowments and wealthy individuals....

from worldwide warfare would want to purchase Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins. Maybe the ice cream and donuts have been a front for something diabolical all along.

they want to buy ALL the ice cream and ALL the coffee and ALL the donuts. Will they sell them to us at exorbitant prices or keep it all for themselves?

22. That was my thought when I read the title...
but I detect a more sinister plot. I mean seriously.....why would this group want a donut shop and ice cream stores. Then, I remembered something. It is the perfect place to launder money....lots of cash received, not too many receipts. Hey, the mafia used it, and they said that OBL used small import stores selling honey to disperse his funds.
What do you want to bet they have something to do with that 9 billion in cash that came up missing in Iraq. I don't but anything past those SOB's.

7. Donuts and Coffee for All Hurricane vctims
Of course, paid for by the government, bought from The Carlyle group at $75 per donut and $50 per cup of coffee. All evacuees are allowed to consume up to 15 donuts and eight cups of coffee per day, maximum (unless you file for a variance). The Carlyle Group has been prepaid $180 billion as a retainer for their services. Sarcasm off!

I just couldn't allow myself to believe that it was THAT Carlyle Group - it was bad enough when Dunkin' was bought out by a non-New England company, but now THE CARLYLE GROUP? AND THOMAS H LEE?

oh my god what is the world coming to!

I NEED my Dunkin' coffee!!!!!!!!!!

17. Maybe this is a good sign.
Could be that the Carlyle Group predicts less war and more peace in the future. This acquisition is being pursued to cash in on the peace trend.

I know, I know, wishful thinking. But except for an indictment now and then, that is about all we have until 2006 isn't it.

The biggest fan of the Iraq War, brought to you by the people that make the biggest profits off war and don't give a fuck about your son or daughter dying tonight.

Why should the Carlyle Group be allowed to make a profit off of war? When it is the troops that do the fighting?

Red, white and blue goodies for the patriots eat. Yum yum!

subconscious level, this is very disturbing. I get visions of Carlyle ruling the world. Normally, buying an ice cream company and a donut/coffee company wouldn't make one think of such things. but, in this case it certainly does. World food control, world water control, world weapons control = world control.

Apu:
"It is the policy of the Kwik-E-Mart and it's parent company, Nordyne Defense Dynamics, to punish shoplifters to the full extent of the law."

The episode aired in the mid-1990s.
