WRAPUP 1-Iranian leader condemned for Holocaust remarks

BERLIN, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Germany, Russia and Switzerland joined the European Union on Friday in a chorus of condemnation of the Iranian president for suggesting the Holocaust might not have taken place and that Israel should be moved to Europe.

The remarks by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, at a news conference in the Saudia Arabian city of Mecca on Thursday, follow his call in October for Israel to be "wiped off the map", which also sparked broad international criticism.

The German Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Iran's ambassador to protest, and ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told a news conference this was being done to show how seriously Berlin was taking the comments.

"When one summons an ambassador, then you signal the start of something in diplomacy, that there are grounds for serious discussion," Jaeger told reporters.

4. Interesting theory. However...
even if Iran does not have nuclear capabilities, Iran is in a position to "act tough." An attack on Iraq would cause a collapse in the toleration of US occupation by the two main Shia parties in Iraq. Iran's defense capacity is much greater than was Iraq's in 2003. Also, what good would two nukes do--in terms of military strategy? If they have biological or chemical agents, this would be more effective in terms of actually repulsing an invading force.

7. drivers seat?
"Well, a second holocaust happens which puts them back into the driver's seat since the first one is getting a little threadbare to extort world cooperation."

I haven't been here long, but I'm hard-pressed to believe this is even remotely wished for. The first holocaust is getting a little "threadbare"? wow.

3. Being attacked would be quite good for Ahmadinejad
Think about it. If the US or Israel attacked Iran's nuclear facilities it would be like 911 in the US. There would be a huge rally around the president in Iran and Ahmadinejad would be able to grab even more power in his country.

I wouldn't be suprised if this isn't his goal. He knows the most they can do is a few airstrikes that would delay his nuclear program but not stop it.

So, if they attack then Iran still gets nukes but it will take longer and the president of Iran becomes politically secure for years to come.

And, if they don't attack he gets nukes. He is in a win/win position.

5. Islamic leaders unveil action plan to rescue a 'nation in crisis'
Brian Whitaker in Jeddah

The Guardian

Though some observers remained sceptical yesterday, Saudi
officials said King Abdullah, in his religious role as Custodian of
the Two Holy Shrines, has decided to give a moral lead. They
also pointed out that high oil prices had brought cash windfalls
for Saudi Arabia which the king intended to use to push the plan
forward.

The average income in Muslim countries is $1,000 (£570) a
year, a fifth of that for the rest of the world, Malaysia's prime
minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, told the summit. In 19 of the
OIC's member countries, half of the adult population is illiterate.

Though many seemed ready to concede some responsibility for
these failures, Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, pointed
a finger at "malicious adversaries" victimising Muslim countries
but called on OIC member governments to build "trustful
relations" with their people.
