Life and death of the forgotten
Winter's rain, cold are all tent dwellers can see

By RYAN LaFONTAINE
rlafontaine@sunherald.com

HANCOCK COUNTY - For months, William Hayes and his wife have been scrounging for food and sleeping in a tent behind a storm-battered doughnut shop in Waveland.

Hayes said his wife, who was more than five months' pregnant, got sick this week when the temperature dipped into the 30s. Rain poured into their tent, it was cold, and his wife needed a doctor.

The couple was expecting a baby girl, but when Hayes got his wife to the hospital, his nightmare got even worse. The baby was dead.

"Nobody cares that we're living in this mud puddle right here," he said. "This ain't living; man, this is one hell of a mess."

 The forgotten -
Third world conditions on our shores and soldiers dying in illegal and immoral wars.
Can this be the reality for the citizens of this country, is this the heritage of the land of liberty?
Where is the outrage, can you not see, how easily this can happen to you?
I never thought it would happen to me.
Foresaken, forgotten and dispensible - the nobel future of we, the people of the United States of America.

What about those folks that rallied to keep Terry Schiavo alive? What about the network/cable news organizations?

Don't these people deserve the same attention? Don't they deserve the same outrage?

Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 08:21 PM by AuntiBush
Oh sure. They came out in the middle of the night, live on C-SPAN (I watched it w/barf-bag nearby) screaming their faux outrage for Ms. Schiavo. And the NEWS stations covering it like it was nuttin' they'd ever seen. All over the airwaves while Jeb tried his crap almost causing kaos between his men and those protecting that hospital under that Judges orders.

Now, nothing but how "great" the rebuild is, if that and literally nothing at all.

It is you're country, merh. And yes, they do deserve major attention especially during this holiday season. But what to Republicans choose to do; scream about Democrats trying (B.S.) to take Christmas out of the holidays, or what the hell ever. And give themselves raises and double tax breaks for the most wealthiest Americans; bring in those from India to take out jobs & China ready to hit us even harder. People on the other side are awakening. I know. Hear it every where I go! Fed-up - everyone.

We should all hit that rebuild link and send what we can.

So sorry, merh. Mean that.

36. That's not necessarily the solution
as they (as individuals) have access to massive funds that allow them to maintain an army of lawyers. It would take massive bucks to compete with that.

The public "incorporating" would be impossible without massive mass contributions.

They got that status off of the 14th Amendment b.t.w. Talk about using something noble and just for the most evil purpose possible...

corporate personhood, which is unlikely since our 'leaders' have been bought & paid for, how come some other non-human entity doesn't claim personhood rights? Why can't labor unions claim personhood rights? Have any tried? I've searched & haven't found any mention of this possibility.

nationally & globally. These behemoths must be reigned in! They were created to serve us, not the other way around! It is so perverse it makes me ill.

I'm curious, how many people that you know even understand what corporate personhood means? I've asked all of my friends & family over the past year & NOT ONE knew what it meant. And when I told them, every single one was appalled. But, were they appalled enough to visit one of the many sites I recommended? No. Were they appalled enough to purchase or check out one of the many books I recommended? No. Are they appalled enough to make a monthly $5-$10 donation to a site like Reclaim Democracy? No, they are not that appalled.

Arghhh!!!! The apathy & complacency of the average American boggles the mind.

4. it is so hard, knowing that our country has definitely
descended into 3rd world status - we have banana republic with an illegitimately installed (in 2000) leader (plus fairly convincing evidence of a stolen 2004 election). A country where only the filthy rich (not the merely rich) are such a priviledged minority in the eyes of our lawmakers (who are supposed to represent all their constituents).

The continued waging of an illegal war takes precedence over taking care of the country - all of the treasury is being poured into the pockets of the crony-corporations and corrupt politicians.

delivered - FEMA trailer parks not being utilized.

Bechtel gets its paycheck every month - for 3 months now - for its work in delivering the trailers.

Interesting note at the end of the article

Tents available

Harrison County officials announced Thursday that heated, family-sized private tents are available for Hurricane Katrina victims still in need of temporary shelter. These tents are large enough for an entire family to live together indoors, sheltered from the cold weather. Food is available on-site, as well as a laundry facility and security.

The tents are located at 4480 Espy Avenue and will be available until the end of January. If interested, call (228) 452-7150 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please leave a message if there is no answer, and someone will call back.

I don't know what happens as of February 1, 2006 - maybe the seeds of hope will have rotted and folks will just move away from the remains of their lives and the corporations can claim the land and make profits and live in splendor.

63. There was an article a few weeks back about the FEMA trailer park in
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 05:14 PM by 54anickel
Punta Gorda, FL from the 04 hurricane. About 1500 people stand to be evicted from those trailers in Feb as the 18 month agreement comes to an end.

FEMA's not waiting for those trailer to be available, are they? Nah, that can't be that dispicable. I'll see if I can find the article.

Here it is:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/16/AR2005091601922.html

By regulation, federal emergency shelter only lasts 18 months after a disaster is declared, and in Charlotte County the emergency period will end on Feb. 13. By then, everyone is supposed to be out of the trailers.

The deadline can sometimes be extended, but FEMA City site manager Roger Larson said no extensions are currently planned in Florida. In fact, more than 50 trailers have been taken out of FEMA City since Katrina hit, all headed to Mississippi and Louisiana. The prospect of forced evictions is on everyone's minds.

64. My gosh
They are going to kick folks out of their trailers? Means I only have 15 months to get the money out of my insurance company and build a new home. And since building costs have sored from $50 a square foot to $200 a square foot, I am sure I won't have any problems finding a contractor to build me a home within my budget.

:sarcasm:

The bastards better not kick those folks out of their trailers. You can bet that the majority of folks living in those trailers would get out if they could. Baby travel trailers are not the most comfortable accommodations I have ever had.

I hope you find that link, I would love to read that story.

86. I can't even begin to rebuild until I get FEMA help and/or
an SBA loan. My insurance company has kicked me to the curb. I was left with debris and my front steps. My insurance company claims that my damage was due soley to the storm surge which was not covered by my policy. I have a witness that confirms the winds/tornadoes blew off roofs prior to the surge. I have photographic & physical evidence of twisted trees that cut a path from the bay, over my neighbor's home across over my home. My neighbors roof was in the yard across the street and mine was next to it. Once the roofs were gone, the houses collapsed and the surge just scattered what it could all over the neighborhood. The insurance companies are denying everyone, they are saying the storm surge did the damage and they don't have to pay. I lost my home, my personal belongings and my vehicle to the storm.

So I have to keep trying with FEMA & the SBA because I am determined to rebuild. I will challenge my insurance companies decision, but that will take years. I will rebuild, it is just battling with the paper work that can be so draining. Red tape for days.

Just keep those positive energies coming this way.

Have been keeping up with your posts and often think about all you have gone through and are going through in your journey home from Katrina's devastation.

For all DU'ers: Be sure to share this story with those who praise Bush. Am writing to media outlets today about the forgotten people in the story of the aftermath of Katrina...AGAIN!

Our nation and it's forgotten people: A national shame. It's now months after Katrina, and people are still without shelter, the basics of life, and medical care. Many are without jobs.

WHY HAS THIS TRAGEDY FALLEN OFF THE NEWS RADAR??? There's more news these days about being politically correct in saying "Happy Holidays" v. "Merry Christmas" than there is about our forgotten and largely ignored citizens in need.

19. Behold, America the Superpower...
This week politicians were busy cutting more taxes for the rich, and a man and a woman are living in a cold, wet tent. The woman lost her child, but since she didn't opt for abortion, the "faith-based" community didn't care. Abortion is not the only way to kill...there is also neglect, and lack of proper living facilities.

How can we have gone downhill so fast? Five years of Bush and "compassionate conservatism", and we rival Third World countries in neglecting and mistreating our citizens. This should be a loud warning for every citizen of the United States, except for the very wealthy. If natural disaster strikes, your country will abandon you to your own fate.

23. I am outraged and heartbroken by the treatment of the Katrina victims...
and YES! I think it could happen to any or all of us in this country VERY easily.

Our government-BUSH CO AND CONGRESS-have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the majority of us are mere peons to them and therefore disposable. :puke:

Unfortunately, so many around here spend most of their time hating Bush and rethugs in general while revering their political heros in Congress to the point of being blinded by their celebrity and fame. All the posts on how great Kerry or Clinton are is just so much crap because frankly, how much better off are we all individually? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we are all WORSE OFF thanks to ALL of them.

I DO NOT SEE AND HAVE NOT SEEN ANY OF THEM-KERRY OR CLINTON OR THE REST OF EM-DO ANYTHING AT ALL TO BETTER THE LIVES OF THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION! :grr:

C'mon now! Let's get HONEST! We are where we are because none of em care. It is not only Bush Cos fault. Kerry and Clinton and the rest of Congress are at fault too. We must hold the ENTIRE government-BUSH AND CONGRESS, RETHUGS AND DEMS-accountable or we are doomed.

If we want to stay out of mud puddles and not be victims ourselves, we must wake up and demand and expect more-NOW!!!! :grr:

28. rebuilding of schools
This administration is so concerned with negative news out of Iraq, that C-Span this morning devoted time toward people calling in with positive news out of Iraq. Many people talked about the rebuilding of schools in Iraq. While this is indeed positive, for Iraq, what about the rebuilding of those schools, houses, businesses lost from Katrina? Why can't this administration put more effort into taking care of our own American people first?

29. UPDATE - now on the website for The Sun Herald - controversy
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 01:29 PM by merh
regarding the Hayes situation.

Posted on Fri, Dec. 09, 2005
System may not be culprit in one man's homeless plight

By RYAN LaFONTAINE
rlafontaine@sunherald.com

HANCOCK COUNTY - William Hayes has been sleeping in a tent behind a doughnut shop in Waveland for months. But, in this case, the "system" may not be to blame.

Hayes told the Sun Herald this week that he first applied for a FEMA travel trailer soon after his home along Mississippi 603 was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29.

(snip)

But Hayes' claim may not be completely accurate; a collection of some of the county's most prominent names has been caring for people in similar straits for months.

Rory McDowell, a 55-year-old corporate executive from Pittsburgh, Pa., who leads Hancock County Citizens in Action, said that his group has worked with Hayes for several weeks, and even got him a FEMA trailer.

(snip)

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/13370231.htm

I don't know what this means, I will try to keep the information current. The article ends with this statement "Read more about this story in Saturday's editions of the Sun Herald."

I will post all I can find out about this.

The truth is, there are thousands living in tents. I am not sure what is meant when the man says he found the Hayes a FEMA trailer. In my case, when I applied for a trailer, FEMA offered me the chance to live in a FEMA trailer park - away from what I had left, away from my "home" and packed on a lot crowded with other survivors. I chose to wait until a FEMA trailer could be delivered to my lot.

Again, I will post more when I learn more.

85. Merh, are they allowing FEMA trailers to be placed in other places
than in the FEMA trailer parks? I remember in earlier reports that was a sticking point, they didn't want the trailers spread all over.

30. They're only counting tents in tent cities!
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 01:25 PM by intheflow
:grr: I saw SO MANY tents in people's yards, yards without FEMA trailers, yards with mud still caked on driveways and debris piled high roadside waiting for someone--anyone!--to come collect it. The part that really kills me in this article is when FEMA says it can't get a hold of some people that reported they were living in tents when they applied for a trailer. Well, duh! How do you pay for a cell phone when you've lost your job either because of the storm or because the storm damaged your only family car so you can't get to work? So then what does FEMA do? Disqualify their applications, cutting them off for trailer eligibility!

:grr:  :grr:  :grr:  :grr:  :grr:  :grr:

32. There is no organization with FEMA and its contractor, Bechtel.
Bechtel has several subcontractors - I have had to deal with 2 different groups.

My neighbors waited on a FEMA trailer, while they lived with their daughter, commuting daily 40 miles or more to come to their lot to clean it of the debris and recover what they could. They suffered the same fate as I suffered, their entire home was destroyed, they were left with their front steps and a pile of rubble.

She is a colon cancer survivor, you can imagine how hard it was for her to work on her lot for hours with no bathroom facilities available. I gave them the key to my trailer to use when I was at work. He suffers from high blood pressure and injuries he received while in the military. They completed the paperwork, they visited the FEMA facilities and dotted all of the "i's" and crossed all of the "t's", including in their requests their disabilities. For weeks they waited, finally a kind benefactor gave their church several trailers to give to its members and they received on of the gift trailers.

FEMA/Bechtel still calls them to arrange delivery of a trailer, even though they advised they did not need one anymore. FEMA/Bechtel calls them to make an appointment to repair the microwave that is in the FEMA trailer they never received.

The incompetency is delaying getting shelter to those who need it, it is wasting our tax dollars and it is adding to the emotional stress that the survivors are going through.

There has to be an answer - someone has to care.

48. If we can't give these people a hand up,
then we cannot call ourselves a nation.

The purpose of our government is for the good of the people, not the corporations and war machine.

Write your reps and tell them to get their noses pointed in the right direction NOW, or get the fuck out of the way for someone who WILL work for the good of the people.

The people of the Gulf are the best resource we've got for rebuilding, and they can and will do it, but they NEED A HAND UP!

Mehr... I saw a history show recently about the devastation of the 1906 earthquake. The city was just gone. Rubble. It was rebuilt, of course. The Gulf will be too. But it is on OUR SHOULDERS to DEMAND of our leadership that they work for US. We want our country back!!!!! We want our brothers and sisters in the Gulf to have our collective "hand up".

Or some shit like that. Meanwhile, War hero Murtha must be smeared while Lieberman must be exulted, more tax cuts must be passed, military funerals must be skipped in favor of more fund-raisers, while people in Mississippi must continue to live in a cold and wet tent. That's life in this fucked-up country (with apologies to Mike Wallace).

92. This is horrible. Where is our media now? This isn't as sexy as a
blond girl disappearing on a tropical island, I guess.

Then there was this smug religious nut on television campaigning to put the word "Christmas" back into the holiday season. What about the WORKS of Christ lady? Charity, hope, compassion...aren't these Christian enough for you? She probably lives in a warm, snug home and drives her 2.6 white bread kids to their soccer matches in a big, fat SUV.

Our media needs to concentrate on the real issues in this country, not on the crap they have been putting on television lately. I don't give a damn if they call Christmas "Consumer Day" because that is what it is really about. Spend a lot, eat a lot, forget about all the people in the world who are suffering. Don't pray, just buy. Personally, I am glad they aren't calling this CHRISTmas. Something tells me that Jesus Christ wouldn't have wanted his life celebrated this way: people basking in gluttony while others are living in cold, damp tents and scrounging for scraps to eat.
