Senator: Iraq is 'success story'

Associated Press

LOUISVILLE - Sen. Mitch McConnell, the second-ranking Senate Republican, said Thursday that the U.S. mission in Iraq is "already a success story" and chided Democrats for discussing when "we ought to cut and run."

In a stout defense of President Bush, McConnell lumped the Iraq conflict into the broader war on terror, and said U.S. military strikes in Afghanistan and Iraq helped protect America from further attacks by killing, capturing or disrupting terrorists.

Speaking to the Kentucky Farm Bureau convention, McConnell, of Louisville, said the transition in Iraq has been "rather smooth" - noting that in less than three years Iraq went from the fall of Saddam Hussein to parliamentary elections planned for next week. By contrast, 11 years elapsed in the United States from the time of the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution, he said. "I think that Iraq is already a success story, and I think it's going to end up being remembered by historians as a huge success story," he said.

Democrat Mike Weaver, who is running for Congress in Kentucky's 2nd District, said such declarations of success are premature. Weaver said Iraq is plagued by high unemployment, crumbling infrastructure and sectarian conflict that could turn into civil war.

6. If the 'mission' in Iraq ...
... was to destroy a country's infrastructure, kill and maim its citizens, cause violence and unrest leading to civil war ...

... then yes, it's been an INCREDIBLE SUCCESS!

8. (Yawn). McConnell is such a persnickity ass.
As my mother used to say he always looks like he's sucking on a sour lemon. Maybe he's been sucking something else (did I say that?)

9. I'll bet the US could have gotten to a constitution...

... in three years too, IF the British had dictated it and IF a British army of occupation remained. Hell, they could of done it in three months.

10. If he really believes that...
...lets see him take his family over to Iraq unescorted by the military. Fly into Bagdhad Int'l Airport and take the grandkids on a tour of Bush's "success story". Hell, spend the holidays there and teach the Iraqi's about Christmas.

14. So is the administration's handling of NOLA.
Success stories and heroes all over. Directly inspired by Goebbels', or was it Goering's, principles of spin: the biggest a lie, the more chances it has to be swallowed.

15. 1781 Articles of Confederation, what a Moran
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 11:59 AM by pschoeb
anyone who is so ignorant of US history should be thrown out of Office. Also the proto Articles of Confederation started being written and passed around in 1774. Besides it is possible to have a Democratic country without a constitution(unless you want to denigrate our ally Britain), so we could go back to the Continental Congress(1774). The Articles of Confederation were accepted the same year as our conclusive victory over the British at Yorktown. So for Iraq to follow our model, some constitution that was being hammered out even before the US invaded Iraq, by internal democratic supporters in Iraq would have had to be accepted by Iraqi's a few months after Saddam's army surrendered.

"In a stout defense of President Bush, McConnell lumped the Iraq conflict into the broader war on terror, and said U.S. military strikes in Afghanistan and Iraq helped protect America from further attacks by killing, capturing or disrupting terrorists."

Yeah, right. By invading IRAQoslavia and creating terrorists, and making existing terrorists more powerful (al-Zarqawi), teaching terrorists and insurgents the modus operandi and weaknesses of the American Military and how to better kill American service-members by turning IRAQ effectively into a training ground, and splitting IRAQ up into three ethnic factions basically giving IRAN a free hand to radicalize SHIITES (seperate nation-states to follow), we've really 'handed it' to the "terra-ists."

Mission Accomplished...

20. Success story? Tell another one before that one gets cold
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 10:32 PM by MODemocrat
Bush started the war in Iraq based on lies, so anything he might have done since is really "beside the
point". There is no success story to it, period!! He can call it anything he chooses, but the fact is,
it is still an unprovoked war, err, I mean quagmire.

21. cut and run...

Apparently of naval origin, with no connotations of cowardice...

CUT AND RUN! To cut and run an expression often thought to imply the cutting of a hemp cable with an axe, thus abandoning an anchor, when a ship needed to get quickly under way in an emergency. The more accurate origin of the saying was at anchor in an open roadstead, of furling their sails with them stoppered to the yards with ropeyarns, so that the yarn's could be cut and the sails let fall when the need to get under way quickly was urgent.

But If "cut" means cut our losses, then by all means cut them.
