Bus crash on I-10 kills relief volunteer

An out-of-state bus carrying hurricane relief volunteers lost control and crashed on eastbound Interstate 10 near the Poydras Street/Superdome exit Saturday afternoon, killing one passenger and injuring several others, police said.

A 25-year-old Portland, Maine, woman died at the scene after she was ejected through the windshield, landing beneath the bus, a passenger said. Police withheld her name pending notification of family.

. . . .
"I really don't want to talk about it; one of my best friends has died," one young man said. "We're from Maine. We're here to do hurricane relief work."

The people on the bus are volunteers with the Common Ground Collective, based in Algiers. The group is doing hurricane relief work in Plaquemines Parish and New Orleans, according to group spokeswoman Carol Dyer. One of the passengers said they also work with other relief organizations.

3. Incredibly Sad!
I was stuck in the traffic congestion that ensued after this tragic accident. I was horrified when I heard that Common Ground volunteers were on the bus. Thank you Common Ground for all you are doing here. My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of this young woman.

4. It's so unfair when the good die so young.
I'll never understand why such a horrible thing could happen to this good woman, yet people like Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz go right on breathing.

5. The bus driver was a 20 year-old girl
Not a smart idea to put someone who's only been driving for a few years in charge of driving a huge vehicle through an unfamiliar part of the country.

Terrible tragedy.

6. I-10 crash victim ID'd as Maine volunteer
Update to story:
A hurricane relief volunteer who was killed in a bus crash in New Orleans on Saturday afternoon has been identified as Meg Perry, 25, of Portland, Maine.
