Hughes intent on improving U.S. image in the Muslim world

WASHINGTON - Karen Hughes says that when she agreed earlier this year to become America's point person on public diplomacy, with a special emphasis on reaching out to Muslims, she read every report on the subject she could find.

"One of the things that came through (was) that America is perceived as talking at people rather than listening to them," she said in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in her suite of offices at the State Department, where she now serves as undersecretary for public affairs and public diplomacy.

"And so I felt it was important early in my tenure here for me to travel and reach out and listen to people - both for me to be able to hear and learn and understand better, but also to show a willingness for America to listen."

Critics say that's precisely what she hasn't done.

They say Hughes is still in spin mode, deploying the media skills that served President George W. Bush so well in her years as his communications director but that are more problematic when it comes to frictions over the U.S. war on terrorism and its role in the Middle East.

7. IMO, best thing K Hughes could do to improve US image
anywhere (including the US) would be to go home and find something else to do.

Can we call her Clueless Karen?
clip-
Yet as she runs through some of the thorniest issues policy-makers face, from allegations of torture to skepticism over America's goals in Iraq, Hughes says again and again that if critics better understood U.S. policies they would be supportive

Ain't that special!

Clip-

In a University of Maryland survey of six Arab nations released earlier this month, 69 percent of those polled said they "do not believe" that promoting democracy is America's real goal in Iraq or the Middle East. Of those surveyed 76 percent said that oil was "a major objective" of U.S. policy in the region; 68 percent cited the protection of Israel, 63 percent said a U.S. desire to dominate the region, and 59 percent said weakening the Muslim world.

16. She is so typical
of the absolutely idiotic choices that Bush makes. He sends an overbearing, obnoxious woman to lecture the Arab world about how wrong they are, and calls it a "listening" tour. Any concerns Arabs have about our meddling in their countries is chalked up to them not understanding us correctly. It's always somebody else's fault with this administration, never theirs. They are incapable of admitting even the possibility that they might, on occasion, be wrong about something. Nope, not Dubya, who is the most inept man ever to disgrace the Oval Office. He's never wrong, it's the other person who is. Karen Hughes is a perfect example of why Bush screws up so badly...because he decided that it was just a matter of explaining to others why he's right, neither he nor Hughes will make any attempt at actually listening to the other side, much less considering their point of view.

18. I know
It's just a communication problem. :sarcasm: If Hugh! was just allowed to speak clearly to the Muslims, they would all understand the beauty of the bushco plan. It's really fantastic if you look closely.

13. Hughes is every bit as effective as . . .
Karl Rove is in helping New Orleans rebuild (remember that Bush appointed him to do this?) or Paul Bremer was in the transitional government of Iraq (which still hasn't accounted for some $9 billion it was allotted).

SOP for this corrupt administration.

15. A bunch of bullies force their way
into a neighborhood. They remove the leaders by force and terrorize the people, raiding their homes and stealing their resources. The people fight back and there are numerous casualties on both sides. The bullies refuse to leave and the atmosphere becomes increasingly toxic. No one is safe.

Unable to subdue the occupied people, the bullies in desperation hatch a plan. Hire a PR firm and claim to be misunderstood. Invite the neighbors to town hall gatherings and pretend to listen to their concerns for the tv cameras.....while the violence continues unabated outside.

To allow herself to be used this way and made a complete fool and laughing stock, Karen Hughes is surely one of the dumbest members of the Bush Crime Family.

21. Why doesn't she start by learning the LANGUAGE?
Is the US the only country in the world that sends "diplomats" abroad with no language skills?

It's hard to imagine how good things could be if only qualified people filled posts instead of cronies.

23. Exactly
It is common sense and decency to, at the very least, know the language of the people that you are dealing with. This administration is certainly not the sharpest tack in the box. Because of dear leader's deep incompetence, our country is sliding down the drainpipe of global opinion. Respect is earned: not forced.
