Syria is a country we could potentially push over like we did Iraq, but Iran is a different story. They have a decent military with advanced weaponry, US troop casualties would be high in a war with Iran. Also, doesn't Iran have kind of a "mutual support agreement" with Russia to aid each other in case of hostile attack? I'm not sure Russia would be so ballsy as to jump right in and declare war on us, but I'm sure they'd send weapons to Iran.

Bush had been on the defensive since Labor Day as events turned cruel: Hurricane Katrina, high gas prices, his aborted Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers, the CIA leak case, the rising death toll in Iraq.
