Bush defends Iraq war, says he will attack another nation if necessary

WASHINGTON (AFP) - One day before Iraq's historic parliamentary elections, US President George W. Bush defiantly defended his case for war and said he would preemptively attack another country if he deemed it necessary.

In remarks aimed at shoring up faltering US support for the conflict, Bush also accepted responsibility for relying on "wrong" intelligence about Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons programs to order the March 2003 invasion.

Still, "in an age of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, if we wait for threats to fully materialize, we will have waited too long," Bush said in the fourth and final speech in a series ahead of Thursday's elections.

The US president, who embraced preemptive war as US strategy after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, did not name any potential targets but said the vote would put pressure on the governments of Iran and Syria.

"We are living through a watershed moment in the story of freedom," he said. Iraq "will be a model for the Middle East. Freedom in Iraq will inspire reformers from Damascus to Tehran."

Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 04:22 PM by Mike Daniels
The people (outside of the 30% base who get hard-on's if Bush does no more than breathe) will finally say "enough" and the Republican Congress will end up cutting the idiot loose at that point for fear of him totally destroying their chances in 2006 or 2008?

47. I agree. At this late hour, Bush's
last remaining support has gone up in smoke. Bush has been completely discredited. If he were to attack Syria or Iran at this point, the world would rise up against him.

Besides, we're running short of people (2,100+ dead, many thousands wounded), we're technically bankrupt. I'd like to see him try, the old bullshitter.

11. He will do it--he has nothing to lose
in his delusional approach, he will do it and no one will come forth to oppose him except for the powerless which those who oppose seem to be at this point.

I do believe he will do it. I look for signs of the coming warfare, the Armageddon in his eyes, and I believe it will begin with Israel attacking the nuclear facilities of Iran.

The notion that he is insane falls right in to the Machiavellian/Straussian doctrines (he is to be "feared" because of his insanity) and he is, from what we know of his behavior over these past five years, a follower of such neo con ideology. Fits right in with his religious delusions and fits right in with his delusional ideation of "self"--the great "war president" who will bring democracy to the ME

I won't mention the war profiteers who will contribute in order to get their dibs in.

29. "In a age of terrorism and weapons of mass destuction?"
We've been there for a while georgie boy. Several decades in fact. So your idea of good strategy is bringing back some sort of underground cold war?
Threatening nations that already have nuclear capability, or the means to obtain them? Why? how many "weapons of mass destruction" does it take to destroy a country, a region, a world? Are we going tit for tat here?
And the rest of the world is going to stand by and let little georgie boy have his way? You think on your say so, everything will just magically happen turn out the way you want because you say so?

I think not georgie. I think you've fucked up big time. I think you're in way over your head. I also think everybody knows it but you, because everytime you give a speech, I don't hear any new words, new ideas, new concepts-- no indication that your time in office has matured or seasoned you. You are still completely incompetent to run a 7/11 much less a nation. I didn't expect any different.

You still have the mind of a privleged drunken frat boy, who's used to get bailed out of trouble. Your words mean nothing to the dead. And even less to some of us living.

The bulk of our forces are tied down in Iraq.

Reinstating a draft for these crazy wars will be suicide for the GOP.

Syria is a country we could potentially push over like we did Iraq, but Iran is a different story. They have a decent military with advanced weaponry, US troop casualties would be high in a war with Iran. Also, doesn't Iran have kind of a "mutual support agreement" with Russia to aid each other in case of hostile attack? I'm not sure Russia would be so ballsy as to jump right in and declare war on us, but I'm sure they'd send weapons to Iran.

46. This made the front page of today's Stars and Stripes:
A turning point for Stripes, imo, since typically, nobody paints a rosier picture than S & S:

In the latest example of a broader White House campaign to rescue his presidency, George W. Bush wrapped up a series of speeches about Iraq on Wednesday by defending the 2003 invasion despite erroneous prewar intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"It's true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong," Bush admitted — omitting that he and top aides had ignored warnings from midlevel intelligence agents that some of the evidence was suspect — then quickly added that he has no regrets about his decision to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "We are in Iraq today because our goal has always been more than the removal of a brutal dictator. It is to leave a free and democratic Iraq in its place."

Bush returned to the controversial roots of the war in his fourth and final recent speech on Iraq. It came on the eve of Iraq's election Thursday of a new 275-member parliament.

While his remarks were mostly a recap of previous speeches covering security issues, economic reconstruction and political developments, his public-relations offensive on Iraq is but the most visible aspect of an ambitious new White House effort to regain control of the national agenda and stem the president's slide in the polls.

Bush had been on the defensive since Labor Day as events turned cruel: Hurricane Katrina, high gas prices, his aborted Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers, the CIA leak case, the rising death toll in Iraq.

In response, he finally took the offensive in recent weeks, defending his policies aggressively while candidly acknowledging that not all was rosy — a notable change in tone from a president formerly given to insistence on staying the course and ignoring critics.

54. I don't think the military will tolerate another pre-emptive war
Attacking Iran could trigger World War III, and the guys at the Pentagon are old enough to know the difference between Bush's bullshit and real threats.

If Bush attacks Iran, the ONLY thing preventing a world war would be Russia, China, and Iran acting more sanely than the Bush regime, which is pathetic for our democracy to have to rely on and even more pathetic that it is more likely than the Bushies acting reasonably.

More people will die so our oil companies can get the maximum profit out of every last drop of oil--then leave us with the bill and the body bags it cost to get it.

Monkey, it's called your Presidency! It's at a turning point, and things are getting uglier by the minute. I can only imagine, (with much relish), how insane you are going with each drop in the polls, (you know, those numbers you pay no mind to), and the frustration you must be feeling due to the fact that people are finally realizing what a liar you are, and no amount of stumping you've been doing has been able to change this fact. And you just know that bunch of thugs you call an administration must be in full blown panic mode if they are forcing you out of your bubble to answer questions from the commoners.
