Feingold Now Has Numbers on His Side
Feingold Now Has Numbers on His Side
Sen. Russell Feingold, Lone Wolf Four Years Ago on Patriot Act, Now Finds Numbers on His Side
By LAURIE KELLMAN Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Dec 15, 2005 — In Congress, where numbers are everything, the math on the Patriot Act suddenly seems to be moving in favor of Sen. Russell Feingold.

He was a minority of one four years ago, when he cast the lone Senate vote against the USA Patriot Act in the traumatic weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks. The law, he said then, gave government too much power to investigate its citizens. Ninety-nine senators disagreed.

Now add more than two dozen senators to Feingold's side, including the leaders of his party and some of the chamber's most conservative Republicans, and the balance of power shifts.

The new Senate arithmetic that emerged this week is enough to place the renewal of major portions of the law in doubt. It was enough to inspire Senate Republican leaders to consider a backup plan in case Feingold's filibuster threat succeeded. Enough to prompt President Bush to dispatch Attorney General Roberto Gonzales to Capitol Hill twice in two days to lobby on the accord's behalf.

1. Feingold and his potential filibuster was just
covered on CNN, and lo and behold, Gonzales was on there as well. Running a bit scared, are they?
Great news!

2. Oh my God. A Democrat with balls.
It's a two-part challenge. First you have to be willing to advocate for peace and civil rights in the face of the warmongering fascists. Then you have to be able to stand up to them and refute them when they call you a coward.

The saber rattlers like Hillary and Lierberman are the real cowards.

7. Feingold is a courageous maverick in the best sense
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 05:14 PM by dmordue
I met him at the airport once and a republican boasted that he had voted for Michaels (Bush clone). Feingold told him it didn't matter that he worked for all the people of WI including Michael supporters.

Go RUSS!

9. Oh jeez. This isn't about Zionism, or '08. This is about the Patriot Act.
I don't know enough about Feingold's other positions to judge his suitability for the Presidency. But I can say for sure that his position on the Patriot Act is spot-on. Let's not get sidetracked.

5. While I'd rather not have a senator as a presidential nominee
if we had to have one, I'd pick this guy. He's honest, squeaky clean (maybe too much so), and very disciplined.

Also, he would lock up a swing state, Wisconsin, that the Democrats usually have to campaign in very hard to win every 4 years.

15. I love the guy. But doesn't he have two divorces? Media and right-wing
will attack that. Media would go completely berserk about it.

17. The right wing will be most offended by it
They won't vote for a democrat anyway. It could backfire on them as well since I think 50% of marriages end in divorce and it isn't a good idea to forcefully demonize 50% of the electorate. It may depend on if anything serious is associated with the divorces and I have never heard a hint of any type of scandel.

18. He does, but I'll marry him if it shuts up the media/GOP ...
... really, that's the only reason I'd marry him.
Really.
Honestly.

Although I know there is a fairly long line of people willing to make that sacrifice in WI.

6. 30,000 Nat'l Security Letters issued w/o Congressional awareness!
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 05:04 PM by Wordie
From a great article in the Christian Science Monitor!
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1214/p03s02-uspo.html

"The fact that Congress wasn't aware that the FBI has used some 30,000 national security letters over the past few years is an indication that not enough oversight has been done," says Tim Lynch, director of the CATO Institute's project on criminal justice. "The money-laundering sections of the Patriot Act require scores of businesses to track the transactions of their customers and report to the government. It's an aspect of the Patriot Act that doesn't get much attention, but it should. This has huge implications for people's privacy."

This should be memo'd to Harry Reid and the other cowardly Dems who refuse to use their power to block legislation and nominees.

13. Momentum is building!!! Let's keep those letters to Senators flowing!
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 06:11 PM by Wordie
This is truly an 11th hour effort, but it just might succeed, if enough of us write and make our views known. Democracy in action, and a great way to celebrate the Birthday of the Bill of Rights (ratification completed on this day in 1791).

...and it's terrific that the support for this is bi-partisan.

That was the first thing I thought, when I watched his Sneak and Peak talk in the Senate.

I can already say, he's got my vote.

28. Good, I love it when we piss off the ass-wipe...
Feingold is my man. He has answered every letter I've written to him, he IS sqeaky clean, and so is his family. His sister is the Rabbi here and does a lot of good work. There is nothing in any closet. And he is very frugal and progressive.

20. I'm liking Feingold more and more
After watching him on the Senate floor and on Washington Journal, I think he's doing a great job. He's shown that he has balls. If he plans on running in 08 he's demonstrating how to get in the public eye. Not by indecisive bullshitting like Clinton or Lieberman, but showing leadership and leading the fight.

25. I saw him on C-SPAN's Washington Journal Today
Must say I was impressed with his responses to callers, especially ones who gave backhanded slaps. He did very well, and he never got frazzled by the callers who supported issues of * instead of his or his close colleagues' views.

He will be a contender in the future, for sure.
