Twin Falls Marine loses legs in Iraq

TWIN FALLS (AP) - A high school track star who earned a track scholarship to Boise State University has lost his legs in an explosion in Iraq. Marine Cpl. Travis Greene, a 1999 Twin Falls High School graduate, is recovering at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., after losing both legs above the knee.

The 24-year-old, in his third tour of duty in Iraq, was part of a team of Marines evacuating other Marines who had been injured in an earlier explosion. During the early December operation, a second explosion occurred.

Three other Marines and one Navy corpsman also lost one or both of their legs in the blast. Two were badly burned.

The injured soldiers were taken to a battlefield hospital and then to Germany before being flown to Bethesda. Greene was given 79 units of blood by the time he reached the United States.

So, five soldiers lost one or both legs in one single incident in Iraq!!! I'm wondering why we're seeing almost nothing of this in the media. I'm also wondering what the real numbers are for amputation injuries among our soldiers. I've seen a few figures that looked much lower than what I would expect based on what we know is going on there.

I don't know if this qualifies as LBN, but I found it kind of astounding and wanted to post it somewhere.

3. Not to worry. They'll just fit him with prostheses and send him back in.
Seriously.

http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/print.php?story_id_key=5785

There are Soldiers who have shown it is possible to stay on active duty with a prosthetic – or two. Dana Bowman, for instance, lost both legs when he collided mid-air with a fellow member of the Golden Knights parachute team during a 1994 training exercise. With two prosthetic legs, Bowman jumped five months later while on a pass from Walter Reed. He re-enlisted nine months after the accident and completed more than 800 jumps with his prosthetics before retiring in 1996 as a sergeant first class. Bowman has been working since as a motivational speaker, including with the Army’s recruiting command. (www.danabowman.com)

So much for that old shoot-off-a-toe draft dodge... (sigh)

Sad for this soldier. I hope he comes out of it like Bowman did.

4. Nothing spells victory like a double amputation
or maybe it's a symbol of staying the course...
or maybe it's what defines success

or maybe it's just a damn shame

6. Here is some non-info for you
http://democracyrising.us/content/view/381/165/Members of Congress Ask Bush to Stop Undercounting U.S. Casualties

December 7, 2005

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

We are concerned that the Department of Defense has been under-reporting casualties in Iraq by only reporting non-fatal casualties incurred in combat. We write today to request that you provide the American people with a full accounting of the American casualties in Iraq since the March 19, 2003 invasion, including a full accounting of the fatalities, the wounded, those who have contracted illnesses during their time overseas, and those suffering from mental afflictions as a result of their service in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. We are concerned that the figures that were released to the public by your Administration do not accurately represent the true toll that this war has taken on the American people.

On November 21, 2004, CBS' 60 Minutes led its program with a segment on the subject of uncounted "non-combat" casualties. They interviewed badly injured soldiers who were upset by their being excluded from the official count, even though they were, in one soldier's words, "in hostile territory...". The Pentagon declined to be interviewed, instead sending a letter that contained information not included in published casualty reports. "More than 15,000 troops with so-called 'non-battle' injuries and diseases have been evacuated from Iraq," wrote the Department of Defense. John Pike, Director of GlobalSecurity.org told 60 Minutes in that segment that this uncounted casualty figure "would have to be somewhere in the ballpark of over 20, maybe 30,000."
Sincerely,

Rep. John Conyers, Jr.

Rep. Sam Farr

Rep. Raul M. Grijalva

Rep. Carolyn Maloney

Rep. Betty McCollum

Rep. Jim McDermott

Rep. Jan Schakowsky

10. I remember there was a period when non-combat injuries
were being counted as part of the tally. I remember when they switched to only counting injuries incurred in combat. I seem to recall that between 10 and 20% of the wounded were in non-combat situations, so that they are now dramatically undercounting the full casualty figures. If you think about just the number of "non-combat" vehicle accidents over there, you know there's lots of badly wounded soldiers that are being left out of the official figures.

Some time ago, I read an article about a guy who had three of his limbs blown off when a tire exploded that he was changing. It's astounding to think that he is not counted as being among the wounded from Iraq.

12. Now that is true - if you add "other" (illnesses) & "other" (wounded)
the number of casualties climbs

I've seen the reports of the breakdown

7. Even in conservative Twin Falls, Idaho
support for W's war is slipping.

I see all the pictures of young Iraqis voting here in the U.S. and idle Iraqis in Iraq. Yet our young are being killed and maimed?

This is a tragic story. I hope BSU will offer a full scholarship.

Our workforce has 3, maybe 4 kool aid drinkers out of 25.

If he doesn't get something at BSU, CSI could be a possibility. So very sad...

13. Not the end of the world
As a 56 year old male with muscular dystrophy who has slowly lost the ability to walk over about 30 years, and who now has basically useless legs, let me say that life in a wheelchair is not the end of the world. I am also the son of a WWII disabled vet. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't wish disability on my worst enemy. It makes me tear up just to think about these guys and what they and their families are and will be going through. These guys deserve all the financial and medical assistance available and get it at taxpayer expense. Not to mention the emotional support of every citizen of this country. I pray they will lead happy and productive lives in spite of what has been handed them. It can be done.

PS: Members of Congress supporting reducing veteran and military personnel benefits should roast for eternity in the hottest corner of Hell!

I have muscular dystrophy as well although I am still mobile, I won't let this disease get the best of me! You're right Slyder, things could always be worse and it isn't the end of the world....If I gotta be in a wheel chair someday I will deal with it. It is the fact that these things DIDN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN to these folks in Iraq that makes me upset....

Look at Heather McCartny. Of course losing two legs is worse.

I lost one at age 7. I am now 45, the mother of two great kids, active physically, and mentally. Get a grip. Which isn't to say losing a leg is a great thing, especially not in an f'd up war like this- but it is better than death.

20. I check www.icasualties.org daily for the truth
about both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Right wingers want to concentrate on purple fingers of Iraqis without regard to the cost paid by our troops and our economy.

The Twin Falls article is out there also.

24. I saw the video of that today, coincidentally
One blast flipped a Bradley over on its side, when others showed up to try help, another one blew right where they were standing. I'm surprised they lived at all.
