Cheney Fields Tough Questions From Troops

Facing tough questions from battle-weary troops, Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday cited signs of progress in Iraq and signaled that force changes could come in 2006.

...

"From our perspective, we don't see much as far as gains," said Marine Cpl. Bradley Warren, the first to question Cheney in a round-table discussion with about 30 military members. "We're looking at small-picture stuff, not many gains. I was wondering what it looks like from the big side of the mountain - how Iraq's looking."

Cheney replied that remarkable progress has been made in the last year and a half.

"I think when we look back from 10 years hence, we'll see that the year '05 was in fact a watershed year here in Iraq," the vice president said. "We're getting the job done. It's hard to tell that from watching the news. But I guess we don't pay that much attention to the news."

...

Shouts of "hooah!" from the audience interrupted Cheney a few times, but mostly the service members listened intently. When he delivered the applause line, "We're in this fight to win. These colors don't run," the only sound was a lone whistle.

13. Exactly what I was thinking.
You see, I spent 9 years in the Army. Fortunately, I didn't have to go to war, anywhere. I got out right before the Gulf War. I can tell you, though, as an enlisted person, when I, or we, were upset about something the civilians in charge were doing, or even our immediate superiors - if we thought things were FUBAR - we did not sit around and wonder what the "big picture" looked like. We were worried about our own rear-ends and what these guys were doing to us. This question seems particulary suspicious. Unless, of course, he's your typical altruistic American boy. (/sarcasm)

41. NPR ran the question and cheers
they were kind in calling them 'polite'. I have heard a pack of Marines worked up, and it didn't sound like the NPR tape. Think of it, Cheney has spent more time in a war zone in Iraq than he spent in VN. How hard do you think these Marines would defend Cardiac Cheney's ass if they came under fire. Urrah.

I saw the photos on another thread. Whew, Cheney looks really worn out. His bald egghead is snow white. The few strands of hair left on his head are pure white. And I see he's put on a lot of weight, eating all those greasy cheeseburgers Lynne was not supposed to feed him because of his 4 heart attacks + a quadruple bypass surgery + a recent aneurysm on the inside of his knee cap. The man's in terrible health.

He looks sick.

He drops a ten year time horizon on the military, and heads back home for three more years of haunting Washington hallways while real patriots bleed out in Iraq. He'll be living large on his new Maryland estate next door to Rummy while those same men are still in Iraq...unless their dead or maimed. How can Cheny not be ashamed?

16. I found this interesting........imagine how the Iraqi's must have felt....
U.S. forces guarded Cheney with weapons at the ready while Iraqi soldiers, who had no weapons, held their arms out as if they were carrying imaginary guns.

They don't trust them with weapons, even unloaded ones. Thats a sure way to built confidence. It almost as if were training them a gun point. If there is no trust, they will never stand up for themselves. They must have felt very stupid with there imaginary guns.

17. Unless the drill has changed since Poppy Bush
visited the troops in Gulf One, most of the regular troops there had no arms or ammo. I was struck by the contrast, prior to GW 1, of Saddam and 41. They showed on the news, Saddam walking among his people and reaching out, jerking a gun from a guys hands and cranking off a few into the air. By contrast the reports when 41 visited the troops in Kuwait, before the first invasion, is that the regular troops had to turn in their ammo.

29. It wasn't just GW1, it was reported a few months ago that the British...
...were only issued five (5) bullets each for the initial GW2 invasion, due to lack of ammo supplies.

It's no wonder that they had fewer "mistakes" and friendly fire incidents.

18. Wasn't the best reception, was it?
The skepticism that Cheney faced reflects opinions back home, where most Americans say they do not approve of President Bush's handling of the war. It was unique coming from a military audience, which typically receives administration officials more enthusiastically.

When we look back 10 years hence... We don't pay that much attention to the news... We're getting the job done... Just how does any of that shit even begin to answer the question?

Here's the real set up question and answer for Dick-wad

Another Marine, Cpl. R.P. Zapella, asked, "Sir, what are the benefits of doing all this work to get Iraq on its feet?"

Cheney said the result could be a democratically elected Iraq that is unified, capable of defending itself and no longer a base for terrorists or a threat to its neighbors. "We believe all that's possible," he said.

Although he said that any decision about troop levels will be made by military commanders, Cheney told the troops, "I think you will see changes in our deployment patterns probably within this next year."

I'd have phrased that a bit differently, like "wtf are we doing dying here? what damn good is it going to do?"

19. He also said .......
"You've heard some prominent voices advocating a sudden withdrawal of our forces from Iraq," he told hundreds of troops. "Some have suggested that the war is not winnable and a few seem almost eager to conclude the struggle is already over. But they are wrong. The only way to lose this fight is to quit and that is not an option."

21. his tour was "shrouded in secrecy"--they did NOT even tell PM!

The skepticism that Cheney faced reflects opinions back home, where most Americans say they do not approve of President Bush's handling of the war. It was unique coming from a military audience, which typically receives administration officials more enthusiastically.

Cheney became the highest-ranking administration official to visit the country since Bush's trip on Thanksgiving Day 2003. It was his first visit to Iraq since March 1991, when he was defense secretary for President George H.W. Bush.

The tour came on the same day that President Bush was giving a prime-time Oval Office address on Iraq. Cheney's aides said the timing was a coincidence, yet the two events combined in a public-relations blitz aimed at capitalizing on the elections to rebuild support for the unpopular war.

The daylong tour of Iraq was so shrouded in secrecy that even Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and President Jalal Talabani were kept in the dark. The prime minister said he was surprised when he showed up for what he thought was a meeting with the U.S. ambassador and saw Cheney.

His next visit was to Taji Air Base, where he saw tanks that Iraqis had rebuilt and watched while they practiced a vehicle sweep at a security checkpoint.

35. Those sound like really tough questions - not
More likely planted:

"I was wondering what it looks like from the big side of the mountain..."
"Another Marine, Cpl. R.P. Zapella, asked, "Sir, what are the benefits of doing all this work to get Iraq on its feet?""
- those don't sound like language regular troopers would use to me. If the troops showed any skepticism, the article manages to avoid quoting any specific accounts.

"U.S. forces guarded Cheney with weapons at the ready while Iraqi soldiers, who had no weapons, held their arms out as if they were carrying imaginary guns."
- it sounds like Cheney doesn't trust the Iraqi troops.

"Cheney flew over Baghdad in a pack of eight fast-moving Blackhawk helicopters, following the airport road that has been the site of so many insurgent attacks and passing the courthouse where Saddam Hussein is being tried."
- again, he was too afraid to mix with the population.

42. Yes, he is the ultimate, evil, coward.
Just looking at him makes me ill, when I think of what those soldiers will face when they get home and how much money HE has made from this war. He's a liar, and he is too much of a coward to even let the Iraqi PM know he was about to visit. That was done only for a photo op. Quick flight in, a photo op with the troops, and then out as fast as his cowardly rear-end would let him.

I so despise these chicken-hawk cowards. I don't know how the troops keep their cool when they see them using them for their own political purposes and for profit.

Back home, Cheney/Bush et al, are cutting programs as fast as they can that will affect the troops and their families ~ I don't know how they sleep at night, but then again, if you are devoid of humanitarian feelings, I suppose it's not hard.
