Army allows Reserve officers to leave rather than go to war
By Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY

Almost two-thirds of the Army officers in a special Reserve program have been allowed to resign rather than go to war, the Army has disclosed. The 265 officers are among 410 reservists who had orders that likely would have sent them to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Faced with growing unrest among soldiers called back to active duty from the rarely used Individual Ready Reserve, the Army took the unprecedented step last month of granting a way out for officers who had received orders for duty but did not want to go: They could resign.

2. If you're an officer, you don't have to go to Afghanistan. You can resign
But if you are a regular grunt, you do not get that option.

Typical

4. figures
The desk warriors never do their duties, they always find a way out. In my year in Vietnam I had 6 different platoon leaders, they would spend just enough time in the bush to qualify for a rear echelon job. Now these cowards will be on all the right-wing talk shows telling what a great job america is doing, and how we should support the troops.

5. What Colonel Hackworth
referred to as "getting their ticket punched" so they could go on to bigger and better things.

6. Do you think this war is being fought by reservist for a reason?
Zero's (officers) can always resign their precious commission. That would be their prerogative, I believe. Or you could go AWOL, like, well W did.

7. Officers have always had the option of submitting their resignations
whenever they wanted. They are not under a contract like enlisted members. Officers serve at the pleasure of Congress/president. But, that does no mean the military has to accept their resignations and the officer is still required to meet any obligated service and/or pay for costs.

I'm surprised the military is accepting their resignations in time of war.
