Family: Alabama marine shot to death sleeping in Iraq barracks

Associated Press

CULLMAN, Ala. - Military officials confirmed Tuesday that a Cullman County marine was killed by a "non-hostile" gunshot wound in Iraq, a fatal shot his family said was fired to his head while while sleeping inside his quarters in Fallujah.

...

"The Marines came out to my house Saturday morning and told me my son was shot in the back of his head in his secure barracks," his mother, Glenda Fales, told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday.
"They said it was under investigation and they won't tell us anything else. We don't know if it was accidental or if somebody shot him on purpose," she said.

Glenda Fales said her son's body has been in Delaware since Sunday and the Marines have not confirmed when they will release it for burial. She is faced with the possibility of a Christmas funeral, and her birthday is Dec. 26.

"My son was a marine and he's laying in a hangar by himself," she said. "They told me he was dressed and ready. ... The Marines are just not doing what they need to be doing to get him home."

1. This is so sad..
just breaks your heart to here this. There have been a lot of issue with the bodies not being released correctly to the survivors. Some have to be picked up - as cargo

Lots of questions on this death... it's one thing to be killed by the enemy, but another if it was
'friendly' fire or in this case maybe murder. Lots of questions here...

2. How totally horrible
If each and every one of the people who have lost loved ones to this insane dictator's fraudulent war does not in the future back said dictator's removal, something is very wrong.

(Some of them have to feel that their loved one's death was not in vain, so they have to continue the "rah rah freedom and democracy" stuff. But sadly, one day they will realize that it wasn't freedom and democracy we were spreading... it was death. I truly feel for the families of the killed soldiers.)

8. Fragging - he was a corporal, but...
He was a corporal with Combat Service Support Detachment-21, so maybe it was fragging - one of his own men shot him because he did not appreciate the orders he was getting from the corporal.

Then again - he was nearing the end of his four-year tour of duty in the Marine Corps, set to come home in February - so maybe it was one of our own who thought he was going to come back and "tell" what he had seen, what he thought. Anyone else who had spoken their doubts aloud will think twice now.

Then again - maybe it was an insurgent who had access to the barracks and shot this guy to put some fear into all of the others - you are not even safe in your sleep.

:puke:

18. They call it non-hostile fire. I imagine that should rule out
any insurgents.

20. I thought maybe non-hostile might mean that
there wasn't a band of insurgents that fought their way in with guns - just one 'member of the Iraqi army' (who was actually an insurgent) who had permission to be on the US base - and alone for a moment did the dirty deed.

I've seen more than one article that suggested that some Iraqi's who are being 'trained' by the US Army are insurgents who are getting training, insider information about the US operation, and even weapons.

It's possible that one of them did this to put fear in the hearts of the US troops...

5. Agreed, this is very suspicious
Shot by "non-hostile" fire while sleeping in his barracks?

My heart goes out to his family. I hope they are able to bring his body home soon.

11. Infiltration of some sort seems likely to me
The big explosion that killed 10 marines a while back seemed suspicious too. I doubt the U.S. military can really trust any local people. A good sign you are in the wrong country.

6. What does it take?
"The Marines is supposed to be a big brotherhood. I support President Bush all the way, but I'm starting to lose some faith in the Marines," said Glenda Fales, of her experience over the past few days. "The Marines can't take care of their own."

:wtf:

9. some cases like this have been ruled suicide by the military's
investigators. they are going to have to be vigilant over this. this is deplorable. how very, very sad and useless this was.

24. historic ny
depends on who they want to blame.
they wanna blame the dead guy, it is suicide.
they wanna blame someone else, it is homocide.

don't matter who pulled the trigger or where the shot went in.

kinda like that kelly feller who suicided himself before he could talk.

21. Sorry, Mom. It was no accident.
Don't hang onto that hope -- go after the truth. Your son was murdered. This is what this war is doing to our sons (mostly) and daughters.

My heart goes out to this poor woman, and the family and whole community.
