Yukon school group found on U.S. threat list
http://www.cbc.ca/north/story/protestthreat201205.html

A group of Yukon high school students who attended a peace demonstration in Alaska last year have been labelled a threat by U.S. Homeland Security.

The students and their teachers from Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Whitehorse were singled out when they crossed the border on their way to Fort Greely to protest the proliferation of missiles.

Teacher Mark Connell says he was surprised the Grade 11 and 12 students were included on the list.

... "I think if I was an American concerned with my security, if all of the resources were being put in to monitor a high school group coming from Whitehorse to learn about an issue and to voice my opinion, then I would be concerned about that as well."

4. Maybe Catholics aren't one big monolith of thought.
Maybe DUers will stop making broad brush sweeping statements that make them sound ignorant. Sheesh.

8. I agree completely
I was raised RC, even though I'm a real heathen now! Their are many, many wonderful lay and religious in the Church who spend their lives (and sometimes jail time) striving for social justice. Many do not like Fundies. Many are gay. Many are women. I respect them.

10. I don't know about that
I heard comments were made that the Catholics are a "socialist" organization, growing up
with the Baltimore catechism, the good nuns, etc. this statement makes me see "red."

15. A truly pro-life Catholic will oppose the war and capital punishment
with the same fervor he/she would oppose abortion. Groups like Pax Christi marched against Bush when he gave a speech at Notre Dame, then turn around and oppose abortion and executions. I have the utmost respect for them!

22. I am not ignorant, I am Catholic, and
all of my very religious Catholic friends hate abortion and gays, and never saw a war by Bush or a death penalty case they were not in love with.

The Catholic Church has changed, and I hardly know any liberal Catholics. I know TONS of fundamentalist Catholics, they are as out-of-touch as the strict fundamentalists. And I live in a blue state. So it is not just a generalization, thanks, anyway, for the critique.

30. I'd have to agree.
I was shocked with all that dumbass "hand raising" in the air like fundie freaks the last times I attended mass.

That is NOT proper catholic conduct during mass.

25. I've had to make the same response
to posters accusing church-goers as being brainwashed.

I'm getting sick of it. I don't use those tactics and I expect the same courtesy in return!

Thanks for speaking out on this.

31. And we are sick and tired of all the apologists here who remain SILENT
when the "church" goes on it's latest gay bashing jihad and then starts LOBBYING elected officials to do the same!

THAT'S what sickens me!

I don't see ANYBODY confronting these assholes LOUDLY AND IN PUBLIC except in hushed breaths on forums like DU or PRIVATELY when we're alone.

SILENCE = DEATH and AGREEMENT.

Until we see loud and numerous protests against this unforgivable behavior, then we have to assume you all secretly APPROVE!

Go "protest" to idiots who would swallow it.

We don't.

32. I do not belong to a church
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 06:04 AM by nathan hale
that advocates any such thing! Not now. Not never!

Maybe you've been in a bunch of churches recently and have heard such trash.

But not in MY church! And not in the church of any of the ecumenical group that meets at our church weekly for 2 hours of picking and grinning. I have NEVER heard politics discussed there by any of THAT group, either. (And they are made up of Catholics, Baptists, Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons, Jews, and anyone else who cares to sing along.

What I do hear spoken is love, tolerance, how horrible the "war" in Iraq is.

You're probably hanging out in the wrong churches.

And, Jesus has already confronted those assholes LOUDLY AND IN PUBLIC. And I stand by HIM. YOU remember -- the Pharisees and money changers at the Temple? It's still going on. And in the same places. Of course there are hypocrites. Everywhere. Even here. And, as enlightened thinkers, you and I have the major task of letting them know what we think of hypocrisy and terrible wrongs against their fellow humans and then for us to not do likewise.

29. Too bad they ACT that way, then.
It's a shame that all of the others remain stunningly SILENT.

We only go by what is presented in front of us, unfortunately.

And unfortunately, just the fundies and other similar idiots ARE the "face" of the catholics, whether you or I like it or not.

5. The one that got me was the Catholic Workers's "semi-communist...
...ideolgy" of FEEDING THE POOR! (FBI spy notes--see other thread on this.) The Catholic Workers do soup kitchens, live in voluntary poverty, and hold PUBLIC civil disobedience antiwar protests on the weekends (and go to jail voluntarily), when they're not up at four in the morning gathering and cooking food for thousands of homeless. Founded in the 1920s. Probably the most honest and charitable people on God's earth. "Semi-communist ideologues"!

26. I had to laugh too. It's like something you might expect in the Simpsons.
How silly must these defence department people feel, making judgements like this, maybe even following these children around during their visit?

It's almost beyond laughing though, it's so embarrassing for the DOD. Imagine, grown men and women, probably making a decent salary, simply wasting their time and taxpayers' money and making fools of themselves.

19. Ok! That tears it. Obviously this is a program for morans run by
morans. I have no doubt whatsoever that every single person who posts on this message board has also been labelled a threat by Homeland Security. I think Skinner should file a FOIA request, I think we should all stand by and I think a legal fund should be created to sue these bastards for civil rights violations.
