Donors Underwrite DeLay's Luxury Lifestyle

Donors Underwrite DeLay's Luxury Lifestyle
Political Donors Underwrite Luxury Lifestyle for Rep. Tom DeLay and His Aides
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Dec 20, 2005 — As Tom DeLay became a king of campaign fundraising, he lived like one too. He visited cliff-top Caribbean resorts, golf courses designed by PGA champions and four-star restaurants all courtesy of donors who bankrolled his political money empire.

Over the past six years, the former House majority leader and his associates have visited places of luxury most Americans have never seen, often getting there aboard corporate jets arranged by lobbyists and other special interests.

Public documents reviewed by The Associated Press tell the story: at least 48 visits to golf clubs and resorts with lush fairways; 100 flights aboard company planes; 200 stays at hotels, many world-class; and 500 meals at restaurants, some averaging nearly $200 for a dinner for two.

Instead of his personal expense, the meals and trips for DeLay and his associates were paid with donations collected by the campaign committees, political action committees and children's charity the Texas Republican created during his rise to the top of Congress.

3. Of course it is. He got a law passed that Congressman could
get donations, fees, and costs paid from "charitable organizations." It was part of the Campaign Finance Reform bill.

At the time I said "Whoa!". He's set up a "children's charity" and this isjust a ruse to funnel money through that (and donations to it would even be tax-deductible) to him.

Unfortunately, it seems that few knew that he had set up that charity and it didn't get much press. Also the connection between his insertion of that protection and his access tohis special "charity" did'nt get much press.

Sometimes I really feel like Cassandra. I see things, their connections, and the probable consequences of certain actions. But people don't believe me until those things happen.

7. Scratch My Back...I Scratch Yours...
Unfortunately, it ain't what you know - its who you know. Some things never change. And I would guess that the bugman is a master at taking care of those he "knows", just as they take care of him. We have to stop this stuff.

16. But to be a legitimate charitable organization certain IRS rules must
be followed - and one of them is that money cannot be spent strictly on "entertainment" no matter how important the recipient is. So I think the bugman may have a problem.

DeLay to announce re-election bid today

By TJ Aulds
The Daily News

Published December 20, 2005

Amid a criminal investigation into the use of campaign funds and poll numbers that show he is losing support within his own district, U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay will file for re-election today.

In an unusual move for his campaign, DeLay will file a petition to hold onto his seat instead of simply filing paperwork with the appropriate fee.

15. Averaging $200 for a dinner for two.
While many Americans struggle to get by on $200 a month for groceries.

It's time to exterminate the bugman's power.

18. These so-called "charities" remind me of Sibel Edmonds's charges.
Abramoff had them, too. Just another way to move dirty money around, SOP GOP. We simply cannot allow this same crime family to count the votes in 2006.
