Fewer African-Americans enlisting in the military
Fewer African-Americans are joining the Army, a trend likely to make it harder to keep the all-volunteer military at full strength.

The percentage of African-Americans among all those who signed up for active-duty Army service fell from 24 percent in 2000 to 14 percent in 2005, according to Army statistics. That's the lowest percentage since 1973, when the draft ended and the all-volunteer military began, say David R. Segal and Mady Wechsler Segal, sociologists with the University of Maryland's Center for Research on Military Organization.

In the past, African-Americans have enlisted at higher rates than their overall percentage of the U.S. population, which was 12.9 percent in the 2000 census.

"These trends may spell trouble for the Army, which has depended on blacks to meet its recruiting goals and re-enlistment targets," the Segals wrote in a November study.

I served in the Marine Corps but I signed up during peacetime. I doubt I would enlist today knowing I would be sent to the hell-hole Bush has created in Iraq.

22. They are, but...
...only by taking more marginally-qualified candidates, who passed the ASVAB by the skin of their teeth. Got kids in middle school? Take note - many of this year's recruits will be noncommissioned officers when your seventh and eighth-graders are old enough to join the Army. Nice, huh?

24. Good.
I have lived all my life in poor, working class and low-income areas, and I am sick to death of seeing the poorest of the poor prop up our military while the children of the rich never do their part. From a former OH steel town, to the black urban areas of Clevelland, and now to the border of TX and MX, I see it over and over: kids who feel that they have nothing to look forward to in life and no way out of poverty going into the military because of the sense of honor, valor, and hope that is presented to them. In my area, the valorous service of so many Mexican-Americans during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam has imparted an image of service in the military as a great thing for kids who are hopelessly poor and who will never go to college. Just this week, we lost two, just from this 100-mile stretch of border towns.

Damn these repukes to hell.

25. Is there a fast-track to residency/citizenship if you enlist?
I read that there were 40,000 non-citizens serving in the Armed services.

I wonder if the decline in Black enlisted will be offset by offering undocumented immigrants faster-track residency/citizenship?

27. Non-citizen soldiers
Well, this has tradtionally been for legal immigrants only, as in the first excerpt below. But apparently, after b*sh started warmongering, the Pentagon realized that legal immigrants won't sign up in the numbers needed, as citizenship is just a matter of time for them, and as such they don't need to take such huge risks to attain a small boon of a fast-track process. Which means (without stating so directly of course) that undocumented immigrants are being targeted now.

And that's not to state that undocumented immigrants can't be normal, patriotic Americans -- heaven knows, I know enough kids who were brought over as babies on their mothers' backs, and are now normal American kids with the exception of not having a SSN. But doesn't that fact alone make it equally as heinous for the military to target these kids as "better" cannon-fodder than middle-class kids? (Read on)

From military.about.com:
A non-citizen can enlist in the military. However, federal law prohibits non-citizens from becoming commission or warrant officers.

In order for a non-citizen to enlist in the military, he/she must first be a legal immigrant (with a green card), permamently residing in the United States. It's important to note that the military cannot and will not assist in the immigration process. One must immigrate first, using normal immigration quotas and procedures, and -- once they've established an address in the United States -- they can find a recruiter's office and apply for enlistment.

From USAToday (April 2005):

The number of foreign nationals enlisting in the U.S. military is dropping, even though service now provides a fast track to American citizenship, an Associated Press review of military data shows.

...

Although non-citizens represent a fraction of active-duty personnel, every recruit matters as casualties mount and more reserves are being called up than at any time since the Korean War. One recent study for the Defense Department, using statistics through 2002, found that non-citizens who enlist were less likely than citizens to leave within the first three years; nearly 20% of them left in that period, compared with 32% of citizens.

Bush pitched citizenship not as a selling point but as a reward for service. Last year, more than 7,500 people already in uniform gained citizenship through the military, the highest numbers since the Vietnam War. But potential recruits who are legal immigrants are less drawn to the offer, noting they can apply to be citizens without risking their lives.

In July 2002, Bush ordered automatic citizenship eligibility for foreign nationals on active duty who joined on or after Sept. 11, 2001 (citizenship also was granted to those who died in war and their families). In November 2003, Bush signed legislation that let all non-citizens apply for citizenship after one year of service, rather than three.

But, in a side-note, the most chilling part of this article is near the bottom:

Charles Moskos, a military sociologist at Northwestern University, said he was surprised by the dip but still believes the military will be forced to turn toward non-citizens.

"We can't get enough middle-class kids to die for our country," he said. "This is the next step."

28. US inducts 66 citizens in Saddam palace

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1339813,curpg-1.cms

On a day their grandchildren will surely hear about, 66 soldiers from 30 countries became US citizens in a sumptuous palace built by Saddam Hussein.

"You are truly the best that America has to offer," Lieutenant General John Vines told Sergeant Ambar Penelope Gonzalez from the Dominican Republic, Specialist Collins Umoh from Nigeria and their fellow servicemen and women.

They were given a certificate, a US flag that had flown over the marble Al-Faw palace, at Camp Victory west of Baghdad, and two standing ovations by senior US officers and enlisted personnel.

<snip>

Umoh enthusiastically added: "I can't wait for the next election!" He also looked forward to the "freedom of a US citizen to travel without being bothered because of your colour".
