Feinstein takes lead in wiretap criticism
By Josh Richman, STAFF WRITER

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein led colleagues from both parties Tuesday in calling for an inquiry into President Bush's authorization of domestic electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens.
Feinstein, a California Democrat, wrote to Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. — the chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee — and to Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va. — the chairman and vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence — asking that the panels probe the matter jointly.

"We write to express our profound concern about recent revelations that the United States government may have engaged in domestic electronic surveillance without appropriate legal authority," she wrote. "These allegations ... require immediate inquiry and action by the Senate." Specter already has said Judiciary will probe the matter.

Joining Feinstein on the letter were Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.; Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Olympia Snowe, R-Me.; and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., all Select Intelligence Committee members.

4. Feinstein leading it? This makes me even more concerned that the
spying controversy is a distraction. Look to Syria and Iran, friends. Be prepared for "Gulf of Tonkin II." *

This may also be the reason the NYT chose now to release the spy info--a year after they got it. Some think it was because a book was coming out, and there are other possible explanations (all bad). But, when you figure how much Feinstein and other pro-Mideast war Dems, and the NYT, have been in collusion with the Bush junta, you gotta wonder how they can get all huffy about our civil rights. Did they care about the civil rights of the 2,000+ US soldiers who have died, or the rights of the tens of thousands of Iraqis who have been slaughtered, or the human rights of tortured prisoners, or of the unnamed prisoners now being spirited away on black flights to torture dungeons in middle Europe, or their unconstitutional giveaway of their war powers to George Bush, or the rights of voters to transparent elections not run by Bushite voting machine companies with "trade secret," proprietary programming code and no paper trail? They did not care about any of these things. And now they care about the junta spying on Quaker antiwar groups? I don't buy it.

-----

*(I don't see how they can do it before they get a War Dem in there, to get a military Draft. They don't have enough cannon fodder. But maybe it's gonna be nukes. Did you know they were killing Syrian soldiers and bombing the shit out of Syrian/Iraqi border villages throughout Katrina--and probably still are. Look out. I fear something bad's coming down the road.)

Spying on Americans is no line in the sand! It simply is not permissible, justified or American!

9. well, many have predicted
that once bush and friends have been backed into a corner they would end up fomenting some sort of crisis or play the terra game. i'm sure some have noted that 'stolen explosives' story that appeared the other day just like magic. could it be a christmas horror is on the way?

8. i think more and more republicans will jump on board
as they realise this issue is going to be THE issue of the coming election and that they are not going to want to be on the side of lawbreakers.

12. The pResident took an oath
to uphold the Constitution. Instead, he violated it. Period. End of discussion. He needs to step down or be impeached. Do NOT let these cons create a debate, never mind re frame one. Americans will "come around?" Bullshit. Notice that the same talking points are coming from the "They hate us for our freedoms" crowd. Shout it from the rooftops if you have to. No debate. Lather, rinse, repeat, as necessary.

U.S. Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, last week called the administration's actions "reprehensible."

"In the name of spreading 'freedom,' the president is systematically destroying every fundamental right that makes such freedom possible," he said. "The people who were illegally spied upon deserve to know they have been victimized and should be given their day in court — as afforded them by what's left of the Constitution."
