WHouse calls Saddam claim of torture 'preposterous'

WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday dismissed as preposterous allegations by former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein that he was tortured in U.S. custody.

"That's one of the most preposterous things I've heard from Saddam Hussein recently," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.

"Saddam Hussein is being treated the exact opposite of the way his regime treated those he imprisoned and tortured simply for expressing their opinions. And so I reject that," McClellan said.

Saddam said at his trial he had been abused by U.S. forces since his arrest in late 2003. "I have been hit by the Americans and tortured," he said. "I have been beaten on every place of my body, and the signs are all over my body."

1. perposterous? maybe, but sadly not unprecedented
Thanks to 5 years of continuous lying by the misadministration, the world at large is at least as likely to believe Saddam on this particular count as they are to believe the bush mouthpieces.

4. We believe our own torturers, of course!
What are you, some kind of unamerican pinko?

I note, though, that again Scottie doesn't bother with an actual denial of Saddam's charge, he merely calls it "preposterous." Yes Scottie, it is preposterous that the United States should be accused of torturing someone, but after watching your criminal administration in action for the last five years, it's also quite possible.

3. Sad when Saddam has more credibility than our government
Welcome to the Bush America, where lying is first nature, torture is patriotic, and war is our main industry.

5. This is exactly what can happen when you allow torture.
It doesn't matter whether or not he was tortured. The fact is we have no credibility in the matter therefore those that want to believe it will.
The damage is the same.

6. The exact opposite? Then Saddam is being imprisoned and tortured
for NOT expressing his opinion.

Great :-)

8. Absolutely! After all, we don't even torture in US prisons!
NOT.

Take it from Harold C. Wilson. Convicted of three murders in 1989, Wilson spent more than 17 years in prison, most of that time on death row. In 1999, Wilson's death sentence was overturned due to ineffective counsel. However, his murder convictions were not - and he remained on death row. Finally, on October 31st, 2005, Wilson's final trial began. DNA evidence was presented for the first time. On November 15th, he was acquitted of all charges and set free.

He was placed in solitary confinement where the temperatures were dropped to freezing. As a result, he now has health troubles. And he was kicked out of prison with 65 cents and the clothes they gave him.

And that's just for starters.

Will Saddam take off his shirt on TV and show the world his bruises?
