Menorah vandalized in Philadelphia park

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Vandals ruined a Hanukkah menorah from a Philadelphia park, but residents said bigotry is not tolerable there and have replaced it.

Vern Anastasio, director of the Bella Vista United Civic Association, said the group decided to replace the menorah, which was ruined early Tuesday morning.

The group put it and a Christmas tree in the Cianfrani Park Dec. 12.

The tree was not touched, which Anastasio attributed to obvious anti-semitism.

"Today in Bella Vista, we are all Jewish," said Anastasio.

21. I imagine O'Reilly's overheated rhetoric...
...probably leads to these kinds of incidents. The "war on Christmas" meme is a theocratic one, and it's a call to bellicosity.

2. Do we now have a War on Hannukah?
Brought to you , no doubt, by the folks who claim there is a War on Christmas. It's a counterstrike, that's all, some good "Christian" white supremicist type.

6. This is obviously a trick
No doubt a liberal Jew who hates Christmas, the Baby Jesus and America knocked over his own decoration in an attempt to make Christians look bad! The nerve of some people!

:sarcasm:

16. I'm a bit of a stickler on this
but how branches did the menorah have?

6 = menorah
8 = hannukiah

It's an eye twitcher for me. But going back to the article, I'm glad that the people near the park decided to move on rather than sit on this problem.

22. The Chanukah Miracle took place in 165 B.C., So yes...
Jesus celebrated Chanukah.

History of Chanukah

Also spelled hanukkah, means "dedication". This Jewish holiday traces
its roots back more than 2,000 years. At that time the Jewish people
were living under the oppressive government of the Syrian ruler
Antiochus Epiphanies IV, (a rather ironic name) who was a descendant of
Seleucus, the general of Alexander the Great. During his rule he forbade
the reading of the Scriptures, circumcision, Sabbath observance, and a
number of other religious practices. In order to further promote the
"hellenization" of Palestine, he set up in the Temple of Jerusalem an
altar dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter where swine were offered in
sacrifice. This "Abomination of Desolation" caused the Jews to rebel
in what became known as the Maccabean Revolt, and under the leadership
of Judas Maccabee ("the hammer") the Syrians were overthrown, and the
Temple had all signs of paganism removed. The statue to Jupiter was
ground to dust. A feast was instituted on 25 Kislew, 165 B.C. for the
purification of the Temple. The story goes that light of the Temple was
relit with only enough pure oil to last one day, but miraculously lasted
for eight days, until more could be found. The "Festival of Lights" is
celebrated for eight days.

23. Although I'm not Jewish, the other day
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 10:34 AM by FlaGranny
I joined the local JCC for their gym and exercise facilities. It was shocking to see that the entire large "compound" was surrounded by an 8-foot chain link fence and the gates get locked at closing time. A uniformed security guard sits at the entrance. It made me sad.

Edit: It's easy to tell that Christians are not nearly as persecuted as Jews, at least in the US.

2nd Edit: This JCC is located in a "good" neighborhood, not even near a bad area.
