Hagel seeks hearings on domestic spying
'We don't have all the facts'; Nebraska senator says allegations must be dealt with

Allegations of potential abuse by the Bush administration involving domestic spying is a "very serious issue," said Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., Wednesday.

...

Hagel said a law that was passed in 1978, The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, has worked "very well."

...

"It holds any administration accountable," Hagel said. "The Congress is part of it. The courts are part of it. It plays out the way these kind of intelligence oversight issues should be handled."

...

"I take an oath of office to the Constitution," he said. "I don't take an oath of office to the vice president, a president or a political party. My obligation and responsibility are to the people I represent and the country I serve. I do what I think is right for the people I represent and the country I serve."

1. Hagel
Yep, Hagel out bashing Bush but then goes back to the Senate and votes for everything Bush/Cheney ask for. Same for John McCain. Just a prelude to the 2008 election.

2. My thoughts exactly.
He is looking at 2008. The only reason for this posturing is so he can turn around, point back to today, and tell voters that he stood up to the Bush administration...bla,bla,bla. This is Hagel's presidential ambitions talking.

4. Very shrewd...
Insult your party, its hero and its avenging angel...the perfect formula for electoral success. Why can't Democrats scheme like this?

5. It would be nice if he meant this statement, though...
It is a powerful statement.

"I take an oath of office to the Constitution," he said. "I don't take an oath of office to the vice president, a president or a political party. My obligation and responsibility are to the people I represent and the country I serve. I do what I think is right for the people I represent and the country I serve."

6. All well and good, but how Hagel came into office needs investigation
His "stunning upset" of a victory was one of those too-good-to-be-true deals -- or was it?; him having chairmanship of the electronic voting machine company that counted 80% of the votes in his election, and him being an investor in the company as well. In saner times, he would have been disqualified from running in the face of these egregious conflicts-of-interest.

Let's see what he backs this "tough talk" up with.
