Poland supresses CIA prisons report
The Polish Government has decided not to make public the results of an inquiry into the possible existence of United States CIA prisons on Polish soil.

"The report should not be made public," Jan Dziedziczak said.

Mr Dziedziczak, who has refused to give details, says the matter is considered closed by the authorities.

"The Minister with responsibility for the intelligence services, Zbigniew Wassermann, submitted the results of the inquiry to the supervisory parliamentary commission," he said.

that they bought into the EU to get some of. They need to grow up a little. And figure out that their neighbors are more important allies than Uncle Jam. (xlat: Poland has a habit of burying its nose in American ass in order to avoid coming to terms with the realities of power in the EU. Some nations push funds into the EU, others take funds out. Poles are currently taking out. They'd like to have the same influence as the nations putting in. Power politics. Kind of like the neocons. Big mouth, a shortage of material to back it. No crime, but they need to get in touch with reality, and get over themselves so they can achieve the role they seek. Agitators just piss people off.)

3. Where's Lech Walesa when you need him?
Poland could use some more of those old-fashioned Freedom Fighters.

How quickly the brutal lessons of Soviet occupation are forgotten.

8. Actually,
... Walesa didn't do much when he had power at the national level. Like most of their politicians after the Russians pulled out, Walesa was ultimately more concerned with his own self-image than he was with the country. I agree, though, that he was quite the fellow during the Solidarity resistance to the *communist government*. This, though, may be an important clue as to why Poland seems so oriented towards international adventurism now: It was never a problem to get Poles to dislike communist overlords. Historically, however, the Poles have had too much tolerance for their homegrown authoritarians as long as they weren't followers of Marx or the USSR.

Poland is in deep trouble as a society. Sadly, their leadership has nowhere near enough vision to help the nation grapple with the moral ruin that was wrought between 1939 and 1989.

W Europe also brought E Europe into the EU on somewhat crappy terms -- IIRC, the agricultural land in E Europe is subsidized at 25% of the value of the agricultural land in W Europe. Being that Poland is mostly farmland, the Poles were pissed off. I'd wager that some of Poland's behavior now is a way of waving their behinds in front of the EU's face.

But yeah, all in all, what a waste of national energy and resources.

Cheers

BH

9. Poland is in deep trouble as a society--Thank the Catholic Church
The Church is a big drag on the nation (any nation, for that matter).

5. Don't forget about Poland!
Great...when the rest of the world decides that we are a ruthless dictatorship--
and they attempt to punish us--at least we'll have the Poles on our side.

Don't forget Poland!

6. I'll be surprised if the EU allows that to go on...
...they were quite interested in finding those bases.
