3. ABC News

The suspects are not terrorists and are believed to have no connection to terror groups, ATF officials say. ABCNEWS reported on Monday that officials were investigating the large theft from Cherry Engineering, a company owned by Chris Cherry, a scientist at Sandia National Labs.

The material was stolen from a bunker owned by a bomb expert who works at a national research lab outside Albuquerque, N.M. ABC News was told it was one of the most significant thefts of high-power explosives ever in the United States. The theft was discovered Sunday night by local authorities. The thieves used blowtorches to cut through thick steel walls at the bunker, authorities told ABC News.

(snip)

It is a very dangerous material, we want to keep this off the streets," Cherry told ABC News shortly after the theft was reported.

Also, 2,500 detonators were missing from a storage explosive container, or magazine, in a bunker owned by Cherry Engineering. The theft was one of the largest reported cases from a facility in the United States in the last decade ending 2004. During that time, a total of about 1,000 pounds was reported stolen from government facilities in 14 reported incidents.

Amazing. They just arrested these guys but they know they aren't terrorists. Maybe they were the "good" type of terrorist, like Tim McVeigh or Eric Rudolph...

4. Not terrorsts? I say they are terrorists. Throw them in GITMO!
Throw away the key! Don't give them any lawyers! If they're Christians, piss on their Bibles and if they not, piss on them!

Oh, whew! Excuse me. I think I thought I was George Bush there for a minute! God help me...

12. If you are going to steal stuff isn't it easier, safer and more cost-
effective to steal cash or jewelery, rather than 400 pounds of stuff that could blow your ass to kingdom come, wherever Barbara Walters says that place is?

21. So this was NOT just a target of opportunity
Sounds like it was deliberately planned and carried out. However, the fact they are four white good ol' boys means it couldn't possibly be terrorism, even though at that amount, if they didn't have plans to make an extremely big bang, there must have been a resale client on tap for it.

I predict a lot of contradiction in this tale before it's played out.

8. This is a big mining state
and explosives depots are all over the place. This particular one is way out in the desert at the end of a washboarded, unmarked dirt road, with no signs except the "danger, keep out" signs on the chain link fence.

You really have to know where these places are to get to them. You're not going to find them doing offroad stuff, and you're not going to hike to them.

They seem to have recovered most of the stolen material, a big relief to most of us here. I guess the 4 yahoos who stole it didn't have a buyer ready, same as the yahoos last year.

if they weren't going to blow things up..just what were they going to do with all those explosives? Obviously "Not terrorists" means "Not muslim" or "wrong colored skin."
The news media in this country is a disgrace.

or they could be white supremacists, or they could be a lot of things.

We really don't have details yet.

9. Seattle P.I. - Investigators said there was no evidence to suggest a link
to terrorism.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1110AP_Explosives_Theft.html

Four men, including two brothers, were taken into custody Friday by federal authorities in connection with the theft of 400 pounds of explosives from a storage depot southwest of Albuquerque.

The explosives were reported stolen Sunday from Cherry Engineering's storage depot eight miles southwest of New Mexico's largest city. Federal authorities have said it was enough to flatten a large building.

The men, whose names were not immediately released, all face federal charges, including possession of stolen explosives.

Three of the arrests were made in Bloomfield, in the northwest corner of the state, and the other was made in Ignacio, Colo., said Tom Mangan, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

16. With the explosive in question...
All it would have done is caught fire, not exploded. It needs a blasting cap to explode. Soldiers have been known to heat meals over a burning small piece of it.

24. remember the OK bombing?
the first reaction in the news was that it was middle eastern terrorists and some of the good citizens in Oklahoma started terrorizing their "brown" neighbors. Remember the woman who lost her baby after being terrorized? Then, lo and behold, we find out that it was of our own home-grown terrorists. I have the book "Others Unknown" written by the first defense attorney for McVeigh. It is interesting that the ATF attempted to hamper the defense effort to find evidence. For instance, the hole that was apparent after the blast was quickly covered before the defense could investigate it. The defense had hired an ex-CIA explosive expert to help the investigation, and at every turn certain parts of the government hindered it. McVeigh actually thought that he would go down in history as a hero like Nathan Hale. Someone was feeding him the BS or he was totally delusional. He would not implicate anyone and wanted to make sure that he was the only one to take the responsibility. That was the first attempt to get the Patriot Act passed by a Republican Congress. It didn't pass, however. The Oklahoma police officer who was investigating on his own (I forget his name) was found suicided.

28. How close is Albuquerque to Rumsfeld's home in Taos?
If that's where they were headed, then they're terrorists. But if they were planning on blowing up clinics where abortions are performed, then they're not terrorists.

Ouch. My head hurts.
