Enron Defendant Discusses Plea Deal
December 24, 2005

Federal prosecutors are engaged in plea negotiations with former Enron Corp. official Richard A. Causey, working toward a deal that could provide crucial momentum for the government heading into the signature trial of the corporate scandal era.

If an agreement is reached, it could be announced in a Houston courtroom as early as next week, according to sources briefed on the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are at a sensitive stage and still could fall apart.

Testimony from Causey, who as chief accountant stood at the center of complicated maneuvers that prosecutors allege helped Enron bury debt and inflate earnings, could help the government substantially streamline its fraud case against former chairman Kenneth L. Lay and Jeffrey K. Skilling. The three men are scheduled to stand trial in Houston on Jan. 17. They could face decades behind bars if they are convicted on fraud and conspiracy counts.

Lawyers for Causey, 45, and the Justice Department's Enron Task Force have not agreed to specific terms of a plea deal, including what charge he might plead guilty to and a potential prison sentence, the sources said.

These repugs sure love to sing when they're about to get sent to jail. Funny how all of a sudden they discover the truth and have no problem ratting out their former partners. What a nice group of folks.

1. Why is this moving at a snails pace? (junior's friends)
Ken Lay & Jeffrey Skilling, if sitting in jail would be screaming for justice.

Martha Stewart has be tried, sentenced, served her time in prison, and has been out for a year now!

2. and the whole stewart case started quite a bit after the enron implosion..
and stewart's actions didn't screw nearly as many people in so HUGE a way as did the actions of this crew - heck their baddeeds were international as well as intercontinental.

3. Who's the prosecutor on the Enron case?
Is he any good?

My understanding is that this is a very complex case and that is why it is taking so long. However, it does seem to be going at a glacial pace.

4. I don't recall - am going to have to start paying closer attention, as I
believe a trial against Lay is due to start sometime early in the new year.

5. Whoever the Enron Task Force prosecutors are?
April 5, 2005

Ken Lay is expected in court in January 2006 to be tried with two colleagues for fraud at Enron, but prosecutors would like to see him there sooner.

Enron Task Force prosecutors asked Monday that Lay, former chairman of the energy giant, be tried on his personal banking fraud charges in May or June of this year.

Legal experts read varied motives into this government tactic and do not entirely agree on how U.S. District Judge Sim Lake might respond, although more expect the judge won't push Lay to trial. Even Lay's lawyer, Mike Ramsey, calls the request "intriguing."

Some say the judge will not muddy local waters by trying the smaller case against Lay first and exposing the larger Enron fraud cases' jury pool to a big dose of publicity.

so wonderful. I am happy to know that Kenny Boy just had another VERY bad night, know that Causey is going to rat him out.
The coming year in Chinese astrology is the year of the dog. It will be the year of responsibility, and loyalty. So, it sure is looking good for the moment. I don't think * can order martial law since all the soldiers and guardsmen are in Iraq.

That was his big chance to impose martial law and he didn't get away with it. Thank god.

8. Yellow belly Rat Republicans
and cowards remind me of army deserters running away from a battle leaving their comrades behind in combat. Not surprising since the smallest book in the library is entitled "The Encyclopedia of Republican War Heros".
