Remap case encourages Democrats
By MARIA RECIOSTAR-TELEGRAM WASHINGTON BUREAUWASHINGTON -- Will Martin Frost be the Comeback Kid?
A year after he and four fellow Texas Democrats were dislocated from their congressional districts, Frost is facing the tantalizing possibility of a return to politics in his old district, which included Arlington and eastern portions of Tarrant County. The Supreme Court has changed the political landscape by agreeing to hear the Texas redistricting case March 1.
Redistricting opponents say that there is an even chance or better that the court will agree with Democrats and minority groups that the lines in place for the 2004 elections are illegal and reinstate the prior districts in time for the 2006 elections.
That has sent political oddsmakers into overdrive, scouring the 2002 election map with Democrats predicting a gain of two to five seats. Republicans are discounting the entire scenario.
Just the possibility of once-defeated lawmakers reclaiming their seats has provided holiday cheer for Texas Democrats, who gleefully anticipate watching Republicans pitted against each other in incumbent vs. incumbent matchups.
