Goa villagers accused of lynching owner of stone-crushing unit arrested

Saleli (Goa): Police in Goa have arrested at least 500 residents of Saleli village, many of who were part of a mob that lynched the owner of a stone-crushing unit and later resorted to violence and stone-pelting seriously injuring more than 30 policemen.
On Wednesday, after months of simmering protests by villagers accusing the stone-crushing units of spreading pollution in the Sattari region, of which Saleli is a part, unprecedented violence erupted in which Prithviraj Rane, owner of one of the 13 stone-crushing units, was lynched.
Villagers asserted they had to suffer daily pollution caused by blasting at the units. Even water was no longer fit for drinking as they could taste a “powdery substance” in it.
“They were creating pollution in the area by blasting at the stone units. We had first gone to the Panchayat (local village body) who did not take any action. We later went to the police station to lodge a complaint and even to the (District) Collector. In fact, we had raised our voices nearly two years back against this. But at that time we were not united. Now, that has changed and we are united. We are going to fight now,” said Manjunath Gaonkar, a villager.
Police personnel who arrived at the scene after the murder met with stiff resistance from the villagers, prompting the police to baton-charge the crowd. This only aggravated matters and angry villagers pelted stones.
