Profumo, who spent more than 40 years redeeming himself with charity work for London's poor, was Britain's secretary of state for war when he was involved with Christine Keeler in 1963. At the same time, she was seeing a Soviet naval attache and intelligence agent. Profumo first denied the affair, but after the publication of a letter he wrote her, he resigned on June 5, 1963.

Magazine a few years ago.

She did not fare as well as Profumo. She lost her looks and lived in terrible poverty. It was very sad.

But she seemed to be doing pretty well when she was doing the rounds for her autobiography.

Mind you, this was 2001, and that feels like a thousand centuries ago

The article I read was before 2001. I Googled Miss Keeler and you are correct. She seems to be doing well for herself.

The article may have been to drum up some publicity or sympathy. I remember quite clearly the pictures of her and her run-down living quarters.

I remember that case very well. Even over here, it was huge - as big as Watergate. Headlines every day in the tabloids.

Ridiculed, called a liar, et.... and he was telling the truth the whole time...

Ruth Ellis was the last woman hanged in England. They made a movie about Ruth Ellis called Dance with a Stranger or something similar.

The Anthony Blunt (Keeper of the Queen's Pictures) story was also fascinating, and of course, involved a spy in Washington, D.C.

Like when the scandal was still fresh in people's minds or maybe even while it was still going on.

For those who never saw it, the movie about the Profumo-Keeler scandal was entitled..."Scandal"! From 1989, with John Hurt as Stephen Ward, Ian McKellen as Profumo, and in one of her first major roles, Bridget Fonda as Mandy Rice-Davies.

Watch it and see how many parallels you can find with our current situation here in the U.S. Especially the wealthy, hypocritical Conservative politicians, with their famous marketing slogan: "You never had it so good!"

And the most erotic scene ever? Christine Keeler and Rice-Davies preparing for a night on the town. Fastening stockings to garter belts, adjusting bras, applying lipstick in EXTREME close-ups. While in the background, the soundtrack plays the great junk-rock instrumental Apache.

It was back in the relatively prudish early 1960s just on the cusp of the sexual revolution. The newspapers were hard pressed to explain the whole thing without actually mentioning taboo subjects such as S-E-X explicitly. I was only in my early teens and had a hell of a time figuring out what the problem was--the way the descrbed the goings on, it sounded like someone just went to the wrong garden party a few times!

On the other hand, a more mature schoolmate (female, by the way) explained it all in one joke: "Who's the world's worst carpenter? Christine Keeler--One screw and the whole cabinet fell apart!" :rofl:

a nice guy who writes and edits books about flyfishing (which happens to by my passion as well)...I made a point of not mentioning a word about his dad.
