President Bush's comments on Jay Bennish
Q I'm from Aurora, Colorado. In our town a teacher was suspended for remarks critical of your State of the Union message, made the talk shows, et cetera -- compared you to Hitler and -- actually, I've heard the tape and he didn't, he said, "Hitler-esque," but it's not --

THE PRESIDENT: He's not the only one. (Laughter.)

Q And it's not the content that my question is about. My question is about your sense of the free speech right in the classroom or in public to criticize you without being considered unpatriotic.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, I think people should be allowed to criticize me all they want, and they do. (Laughter.) Now what are you all laughing at over there? (Laughter.) Don't cheer him on. (Laughter.)

2. But he never, ever, criticizes de facto attacks on free speech
Here's an opportunity for Dubya to remind us that harrassing people for their views is not how it's supposed to be.

Uniter, not a divider, my ass.

6. Perhaps a president, like Clinton or Carter, would have joked, then
taken the time to explain how "Free Speech" works. Thus, educating all of America. There is no doubt in my mind that more than 50% of Americans take the Bilble literally, and dismiss science.

3. Laughing boy
Joke it away, laugh it off, crack jokes, it's only our right to free speech being discussed here. Nothing major. Nothing important. Move along. Nothing to see here.

We need to make t-shirts and wear them whenever we speak our mind so when we are arrested, we have our evidence handy.

7. These statements trouble me:
"You're equally American if you believe in an Almighty or don't believe in an Almighty. That's a sacred freedom."

That freedom comes from the Constitution not God. Is the Constitution a religiously sacred document?

and: "I do believe there's an Almighty God that has spread freedom -- making freedom available for everybody."

I don't think God has much to do with this. The freedom that God offers us will come in another world. God offers us salvation.

His theology is totally wrong!

11. "Now what are you all laughing at over there? Don't cheer him on!"
The tragic thing is, I suspect that he uttered these words without a trace of irony!
