Sheehan Cancels Trip to Europe ("not fit to travel")
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2006/03/13/international/i071556S94.DTL

PARIS, France (AP) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan has canceled a trip to Paris and other European cities because of injuries she allegedly sustained a week ago while being arrested in New York, organizers said Monday.

"We had to cancel Cindy's trip because her doctor said she was not fit to travel," said Elsa Rassbach, of American Voices Abroad, one of the groups that organized the trip. She cited an arm injury and possible concussion.

... A pacifist group in the United States, Women Say No to War, had claimed that Sheehan was physically assaulted by security officers during the March 6 arrests following a march to the U.S. mission of the United Nations.

Photos showed officers dragging Sheehan, with her shirt yanked up. Police said four women were arrested for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest. They were among about a dozen activists trying to deliver a petition to the U.S. mission of the United Nations urging a withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq.

3. K&R This should be on the front page of DU and the protest where she was
arrested at the UN just for protesting should have been on DU and other left messageboard front pages. Are we really so fickle that we forget our Whistleblowers and Patriots who stand up??

Sibyl Edmonds site http://JustACitizen.com to unredact her 911 Commission testimony UNDER OATH.

I hope Cindy is okay and wish there had been live-blogging, as there was in Cindy's Crawford protest, of the UN pacifist group protest. Is there anyway to contact Cindy and/or her supporters??

27. There has been criticism of Cindy around DU and it is disgusting.
People expect her to kiss the a$$es of dems in office who don't give a rats a$$ about our soldiers being killed for a lie or for the majority of people in this country who are living on the edge be they middle class, working class, working poor or poor. I'm sick of how many around here hero worship elected officials like Hillary for NO GOOD reason whatsoever.

Cindy is MY hero! :applause:

4. This stuff always throws me...
Women Say No to War, had claimed that Sheehan was physically assaulted...

Why "had claimed"? It implies that they recinded the claim or that it proved untrue.

Meanwhile, in the real world, there are pictures of the arrest and Sheehan's arm so it seems like more than a "claim."

6. Cindy was invited in to the UN that day...
to talk about her issues. Instead she laid on the ground in front of the door. She wanted to be arrested to cause a scene. I don't have sympathy for her for this arrest.

8. Did you watch the video? The cops wouldn't let her in the UN
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 12:15 PM by meganmonkey
They wouldn't let her in and they told her to leave. She was surrounded by the press and couldn't have left if she wanted to, and the cops were in her face telling her she couldn't go in. WTF else could she have done but sit down? The cops were talking to her like she was resisiting, but she was surrounded by people, there was no where to go. But she wasn't breaking any laws.

It was dreadful. It was a clear example of police-state tactics. I'll see if I can find a link to the video.

:(

edit: here's a link to the video

it's the first one on the page, with the heading:

16. Cindy was not invited into the UN to discuss anything that day
Bolton, like his boss, is too scared to face the women (Iraq mothers were there also) whose lives they have wrecked for as long as they live. The main reason being that they lied to start a war which has slaughtered, according to some figures now, nearly two hundred thousand people, men, women and children.

They have disgraced this country with their policies of torture and brutality towards a country that never was even a remote threat to this country.

I am so grateful to people like Cindy who, unlike many of our elected officials whose job it is, attempt to hold them responsible for the lies they told.

Bolton is afraid of the mothers and wives and children of the people who are dead because of their lies, so no, Cindy will never be invited to speak to any of these chickenhawk, warmongers because she is their conscience and they are cowards, who make plans for war in secret and send the children of others to fight them, while they reap the profits.

Cindy doesn't need your sympathy, or mine or anyone else's ~ you know what, it wouldn't bring back her son ~

More should be doing what she's doing ~

21. No
She could have avoided being arrested that day. I believe she wanted to be arrested, and therefore, i don't feel sorry that she may have been dinged up a bit when she was hauled away.

I support anybody making a statement against the war, which she was trying to do. But there are consequences.

23. For someone whose hobby is "beer and chicks"
It's a little easier to understand your uneducated and uninformed comments.

Have you ever taken a history course? Have you ever heard this quote...

"... Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."- Margaret Mead

In today's bush's amerikka, civil disobedience is the only way to be heard.

What have you done to fight the fascist regime? Anything?

24. I contend ...
she wanted to be arrested. She was arrested, and while doing so, she resisted. She had to be forceably removed, which i contend was her intention.

Therefore, if she got banged up a bit, she brought it on herself.

I have no problem with her protesting the administration. If i did as you said, and resisted arrest, i would expect a few scraps and bruises.

Because you have done jack shit to fight against our fascist regime? Or maybe because you're too afraid? OR maybe because you just don't give a damn?

Maybe you should just stay out of the way and let the rest of us do our civic duties.

Go back to your beer and chicks.

43. Here's your answer...
i get up and go to work every day. I work hard when i'm there. I don't take myself overly serious when i'm not there, and i try not to get worked up too much, as it isn't productive.

I vote and treat others as i would like to be treated.

34. You are wrong.
She attempted to deliver a petition, was refused, asked to leave it and have it delivered and was again refused. At that point she SAT down and waited for the petition to be accepted. She was manhandled and dragged out of there. In saying you have no sympathy for her, you reveal who YOU are, that's all. It in no way diminishes her heroic behavior.

19. seriously - they don't realize how easy this could get out of hand
I think citizens have a right to defend themselves from police riots, when practicing their civil rights or any other time. These cops are going to have to decide if they want to follow illegal criminal directives or not. If they continue with such shameless unprovoked violence they're going to get some payback from somebody. They know it to, that's why they're taping over their badge numbers and hiding their faces.

Yikes, the irresponsible comments on fighting with the police amaze me here. If there are any kids reading this, they need to know their lives will be ruined if they protest violently in this manner.

I'm talking about after they've gone ONE MORE STEP. They just threw five peoples lives away because they put up a web site about companies that use animals in research. Claimed that simple facts were incitement to terrorism. Now those people are gone. It's not a damn game people, we are truly becoming a fascist totalitarian dictatorship. wake the fuck up.

32. in the 60s, the start of the second women's movement, there
was a lot of discussion of the way women are depicted in ads, in TV shows, etc......women, at least then, were always smiling in the mags and newspapers; men could have serious, almost scowling expressions, women never

women were socialized to BE POLITE, SMILE, never ever get mad.....if a woman got mad, she was 'hysterical,' 'on the rag,' NOT feminine, etc etc etc ad nauseum

if women were frustrated, unhappy, not working at what they had gone to school for, whatever----if they went to the doctor, they often were prescribed valium b/c if 'they weren't happy and smiling there was something wrong with them'......it could NEVER be possible that there was something wrong with society...

*****there are some reactions to Sheehan that it's HER fault she's not happy, NOT the fault of W carting us into a war where we do not belong, etc etc etc***********

I hope young women today are learning something different, but it sure doesn't seem so from a lot of what I hear and read
