BBC: New 'cold war' looms with Iran

New 'cold war' looms with Iran

The United States is developing the concept of a "cold war" with Iran.

...

It would be a third way between trying to engage with the hard-line government there and attacking its nuclear facilities with the risk of major conflict.

...

However such a cold war might turn into a hot war if Washington decided this approach would not stop Iran from developing the technology needed for a nuclear bomb.

Shift in UK approach

Britain is paying a supporting but limited role, with the British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw making a major speech on Iran saying: "Iran is going in the wrong direction" and "Iran and the Iranian people deserve better."

6. No, I interpret this as a big hint that they want to ratchet
things down. Intimidation doesn't seem to have done the trick, and actually going to war would be far too expensive and dangerous. Best to allow them to acquire the bomb; the Iranians are not stupid enough to attack Israel. So there will be a cold war. At least that's my guess. I could be wrong, but I hope to God I'm not wrong -- military action against Iran of any kind would be a catastrophe.

4. More evidence that the BBC is a joke...
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 11:23 AM by MrPrax
Funny the term 'cold war' is in quotes--but NO ref. to it or the decades long policy it represents appears in the body of the story...

Nor does the story even lend evidence to that conclusion.

Is it the "Third Way' the hamfisted correspondent writes about...IF so, what are the 2 other ways again? Attack...um...not to attack, but be hostile....or um...not attack and bride with trade deals....or um...do nothing...or attack, but only the parts with the oil...or um...???

5. good point: attack or what? The economics of what's going on
needs to be brought to the front.

If the Democrats were serious about preventing this next war, they would talk about this oil and dollar stuff because it would show how hollow and stupd all this talk of nukes and terrorists is.

9. ***PETITION TO SIGN: NO WAR WITH IRAN ***
Hello,

For the past year, the growing tensions mounting between the US, Israel, and Iran are reaching a point where military action against Iran is w/in months of becoming reality. The repercussions are terrifying as such military action could involve countries such as China and Russia as they share massive energy/economic interests w/ Iran. The most likely scenario we would face would be the collapse of the US economy as the combination of a massive rise in oil prices and a run on the US dollar would surely be the weapon many countries would use to fight back against a preemptive US or Israeli strike.

For a collection of articles and resources on this subject you can visit this link: http://reseaudesign.com/research/iran/iran_summery.html

I'm starting up a petition which I will be sending out to as many members of Congress as possible. I'm asking for help to get this signed by as many people, possible in the next month. Send it to as many people you can.

Also, here is another petition you can sign from another group:

Thanks for your time
