families)

This guy created this "charity" when running for the state senate, and then mismanaged and minimally directed the money towards the families. And, he forgot to file taxes, oops. Other repubs in the senate sat on the board of directors and collected "salaries".

It's sickening that the military continues to be used as a prop, without any substansive assistance or support from lawmakers.

He didn't have a problem using the money to pay "salaries" for himself and others, though.

Wiens' late filing shows less than half of donations aided military kin
By Mark P. Couch
Denver Post Staff Writer

A state lawmaker Wednesday released the annual tax filing for the charitable group he established, showing only 46 percent of donations went to financially strapped military families.

Sen. Tom Wiens, R-Castle Rock, reported to the Internal Revenue Service that the Stand in the Gap Project collected $119,336 in 2004, passing $54,472 along to needy families.
That's far below the 60 percent to 70 percent of donations that one charity watchdog says should be funneled to programs.

>snip
According to Stand in the Gap's tax form, dated March 15, the project paid $26,750 in compensation to officers and directors and $10,322 in other salaries and benefits.

Wiens contended that salary expenses should also count as direct aid to the military families, which is not the standard measure used by other philanthropies.

1. Kicking with another quote, that shows repub idiocy, et. al.
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 09:07 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
One former executive director of Stand in the Gap said she was unaware of the group's failure to file its tax return with the IRS.

"That was not my fault," said Phyllis Derby, who was executive director for seven months beginning in July 2004. "I am a 'cross the t's and dot the i's' kind of woman."
Derby, who was paid $13,684, said she lived with Wiens and his family during her tenure and spent three to four days a week working on Stand in the Gap Project's efforts. She said she helped screen applicants who were seeking financial support.

4. Whaddya mean "stupid"?
They just found a way to pocket nearly $38,000 last year for not doing anything, AND duping a bunch of gullible folks with a feel-good "charity." That may be criminal, may even be actionable, but it's not stupid unless they actually have to give the money back. And when was the first, last, or anytime in between that you heard of a Republican giving back the money he or she stole?

- Taking Special Care -

We must take special care of the list with each client's name and the
amount of money he has invested. If we were to lose that list, we
would be ruined.

- If My Wife Calls -

If my wife calls white I'm in shagging my secretary, tell her I'm
at a board meeting. That way I'll be able to continue shagging my
secretary without my wife knowing about it.

- the tradition continues... -

If my wife were to find out about me and my secretary; that would be bad.
As bad as losing the list.

Also:

<snip>
Had you invested $100,000 in this fund five years ago, that investment would now be worth absolutely nothing, with a federal income tax liability of nearly $840,000. But you would have something more important than money -- that you would have none of. You would have the pride of knowing that, though you failed, you had dared mighty things, unlike those timid investors who, in the words of the poet, know neither victory nor defeat. Although I suppose investors who placed their money with our competitors, and thus made a fortune, could argue they actually did, in fact, know victory. And perhaps, in a financial sense, they did. But they didn't know defeat. That is something only our clients understand.

9. This 'charities for troops'
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 10:26 AM by pecwae
trend bothers me. I don't doubt many of them are being 'administered' in the same fashion as this one.

I'm concerned that this administration welcomes and encourages these private and faith-based charities to relieve the government of any responsibility for the vets. When the patriotic drumbeat stops the donations will likely dry up and where will that leave the vet who has come to rely on a particular charity?

Maybe I'm too suspicious and cynical about the government after seven years in the military and 12 at the V.A. I believe the government owes the returning soldier a debt for his/her wounds and I fear they're doing all they can to weasel out of paying that debt.

edit: forgot to K&R
