Allawi sees Iraq mired in “unfortunate civil war”
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 01:47 AM by ECH1969
Iraq is in the grip of a civil war, and Europe and the United States will not be spared its consequences, Iraq’s former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said on Sunday.

Sectarianism will spread throughout the region -- and even Europe and the United States would not be spared all the violence that may occur as a result of sectarian problems in this region.”

He told the “Sunday AM” programme that he had warned against a political vacuum in Iraq, and had expressed concerns over the dismantling of Saddam’s armed forces and prevalence of militia groups.

Iraq is “edging towards” a deal between its political factions to secure a national unity government, but that will not represent ”an immediate solution” to its post-invasion problems, Allawi said.

4. BBC link and video of interview on right
Iraq in civil war, says former PM

Iraq is in the middle of civil war, the country's former interim prime minister Iyad Allawi has told the BBC.
The UK and US have repeatedly denied Iraq is facing a civil war, but Mr Allawi suggested there was no other way to describe the sectarian violence.

"If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is," Mr Allawi said on BBC Two's Sunday AM programme.

UK Defence Secretary John Reid insisted on Saturday that the terrorists were failing to drive Iraq into civil war.

6. You're sure not going to hear it from anyone......
in this administration. Someone's gotta say it. Let this get out anyway it can. Let's keep the meme going that it is now all out civil war. This is the sort of thing that wakes complacent Americans up.

8. Iraq in deep crisis and in civil war: Allawi

London, March 19 (PTI): Amid spiralling sectarian violence in Iraq, its former Prime Minister has warned of a civil war in the country, the ripples of which could affect even the US and European nations.

"We are losing each day an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more. If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is," former interim PM Iyed Allawi told the BBC television on the eve of the third anniversary of the US-led war in Iraq.

Allwai, however said, the situation in Iraq could still be contained. But, if allowed to continue, the country would fragment and the aftershocks of this would rattle even the US and Europe, he added.

"Maybe we have not reached the point of no return yet, but we are moving towards this point. It will not only fall apart, but sectarianism will spread throughout the region -- and even Europe and the US will not be spared of the violence that may occur due to the sectarian problems in this region."

Saying he had warned of a political vaccuum in the country and had expressed concerns over presence of insurgent groups and the dismantling of military, Allawi, who heads the Iraqi National List, observed undermining the problems of the trouble-hit country would be a mistake.
