FORT LAUDERDALE — Finding inspiration from God, The Last of the Mohicans and The Lord of Rings, Katherine Harris told hundreds of conservative Christians Saturday that she is "a work in progress."

Harris, who told a national television audience Wednesday that she would be spending $10 million to win Florida's U.S. Senate race, said she never would have entered politics if she did not believe that God wanted her to make public service part of her life.

The Sarasota-area congresswoman's campaign for the senate has been in a free fall. She has struggled to raise money, and nearly all her top campaign advisers have left. Several tried to persuade the 48-year-old Republican to quit the race, saying she had no chance of winning.

But during an appearance on Fox News Channel's Hannity and Colmes, Harris said she will not end her campaign and will instead spend "my legacy from my father" and "everything I have."

I've encountered the Florida belle on several occasions. They're cheerleaders at their high schools and state colleges where they latch themselves to the hairy armed football captains; then they graduate and try to get jobs in the chamber of commerce where they latch themselves to the hairy armed shakers and movers of the city; and when their youthful beauty begins to fade, they marry hairy armed, whiskey drinking country clubbers.

Clever, clever girls, mind you, who owe their success to their ability to manipulate powerful men.

Who can explain rich people? I went to the Winter Park Art festival this weekend and tried to pick the rich people from the crowd. Now, I realize that old rich are very unassuming people because I met a few in college, but I also realize that there are a group of almost old rich who may be just a generation or two wealthy and they are sometimes very comical. I particularly love the Palm Beachers. You can spot them out in a crowd with their vibrant lime greens, canary yellows and ripe orange blends on tailored capri pants. Then for evening wear for the men, it's a navy blue jacket and white pants. Before labor day, of course.

Rep. Katherine Harris, the Republican best known for her controversial role in the Florida recount battle, is at the center of a new flap — over a report that she pressed the state to treat trees with Holy Water.

Harris reportedly helped associates of the Kabbalah Centre to get officials in Florida's agriculture department to test the water as a potential curative to the canker disease then plaguing orange groves. At the time, in 2001, Harris was still serving as Florida's secretary of state, the same post she had held during the post-election fight in 2000.

According to a July 6 report in the Orlando Sentinel, at Harris's urging, state researchers worked with a rabbi and a cardiologist to test Celestial Drops — a product "promoted as a canker inhibitor because of its 'improved fractal design,' 'infinite levels of order' and 'high energy and low entropy.'"

Harris reportedly recommended Celestial Drops to the state's agriculture department after learning about the product from Rabbi Abe Hardoon, now head of the West Boca Kabbalah Learning Centre. Harris denies having known that the product was associated with the Kabbalah Centre.
