Bush draw protest, support (Cleveland)
http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/openers/

While President Bush was speaking to the City Club, about 300 people gathered in Cleveland's Public Square and along Superior Avenue to protest his administration in general and the war in Iraq in particular.

Singing, chanting and carrying signs that read, "Bush Step Down" and "Wake Up and Smell The Fascism," the protesters stood outside in the cold for several hours. There were no problems.

(snip)

Four Bush supporters stood in a corner of Public Square with signs that included, "Grow up, hippies."

"We represent people who could not be here today because they are working," said Mare Leber, 56, of Akron. "We're here to show our support for the president."

6. Not everyone was happy about him being there
You'll find this in an article further down in the blog:
President Bush hasn't said a word yet in his appearance at the City Club of Cleveland, but at least one member of the "citadel of free speech" already has a beef with him.

Long-time member Walt Nicholes said the City Club is breaking from tradition by not allowing members to line up at the microphone to ask questions. He said City Club officials at first said members who wanted to ask a question would be picked from a lottery, but now they say Bush will call on people from the floor.

Such a format won't allow for true variety of questions, Nicholes complained.

"How's he going to see me in the back?" Nicholes asked, noting that the tables closest to the podium are filled with corporate leaders likely sympathetic to the president.

Nicholes said he was prepared to ask the president about the growing national debt and what he thinks the impact of trading oil in Euros instead of U.S. dollars would have on the stock market.

29. Same here in NY
The local papers, eager or fearful, served up their dishrags as the WH mailbox, glowing over the sham. If that was meant to mollify the awestruck rubes maybe they had better check their circulation after the Big Event. People tore the paper up and threw it into the trash because not only were the stunts insulting and embarrassing, the newspaper gave them incredibly illegitimate positive spin- all because the PRESIDENT was in town. The message of the protesters was buried into a tolerant civic duty, isn't democracy sweet, mode of presentation. The "talk" by Bush himself was propped up by surrogate speakers and token "people" so obvious you wanted to poke them to see if they were real and the audience was mostly drafted GOP loyalists, the numerous press camp followers and ticketed screened and x-rayed locals.

10. Ugotta bekiddinme
The old line political and financial stalwarts that are currently presiding over the dismantling of what is left of the city of Cleveland have never worked an honest day in their lives.

Many of them are just vultures picking over the bones to see if they can steal more public money for their families and political associates.

Gee, sounds just like the Bush Crime Family.

19. For some reason, a lot of Bush supporters, especially the
freeper types, seem to believe that those who don't support Bush, especially liberals, don't work. I have no idea why they think that, but they do.

It's unfortunate that some are so vacuous and partisan that it would take a sign like that to put their stupidity into perspective.

23. None. They really think they are fighting hippies.
There's a reason why the Vietnam war became big last election cycle and Bush and Cheney want to return to cold war paternalism and reverse half a century of civil rights and environmental laws.

It's refighting the sixties counterculture movement, because it won. It was tamed and incorporated into mainstream politics. It just cut its hair.

There was a columnist who managed to make make hippies into Clinton Hippies, conquering time and space to make the sixties counterculture movement followers of a Rhodes Scholar from Arkansas and a bad dressing law student. But it showed how far they want to take us back.

20. I bussed dishes there almost 50 years ago
I imagine these " civic leaders " are the children of the old crooks that were there back then.
I swear, after a lunch shift there, I had to check the mirror to make sure I wasn't invisible---cause they seemed to look right through you and never even acknowlege your presence.
