Carroll, Threatened, Made Video "Under Duress"

BAGHDAD Jill Carroll's kidnappers reportedly warned her before her release that she might be killed if she cooperated with the Americans or went to the Green Zone, saying it was infiltrated by insurgents.

The freelance writer for The Christian Science Monitor, who was freed by her captors Thursday and dropped off at a branch office of the Iraqi Islamic Party, was later escorted to the Green Zone by the U.S. military, the newspaper said Friday.

At first, she was reluctant to go, but a Monitor writer in Baghdad, Scott Peterson, convinced her it was safe, the newspaper said.

The Monitor quoted her family as saying that her kidnappers had warned her against talking to the Americans or going to the Green Zone. They told her it was "infiltrated by the mujahedeen," the newspaper said.

1. I thought that was an interesting comment in the original article...

"They warned her not to talk with Americans or go to the Green Zone because it was infiltrated by insurgents, adding she might be killed if she cooperated with Americans, according to an account on the Monitor's website"

Not sure what to make of it. I think there is a lot more to this than appears on the surface.

2. So much for those DUers who thought this was all peaches and cream and she
admired the "insurgents" and that it was normal to dress that way and repetitiously repeat that she was well treated!

3. It's a little early for conclusions...
One way or the other, I might add. I'm afraid that disinformation is a factor in all directions. Let her speak for herself in due time.

14. She has. And has disavowed all her comments including the interviw after
her release. It is as I thought.

Protected by the U.S. military and far from the country where she had been held hostage, Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.

In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But in a statement Saturday, she said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.

"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.

"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

4. Ho hum
Maybe waiting a week to hear from Ms. Carroll again would be the wise choice here, eh?

Or perhaps you just like being out on a limb with your predictions.

6. She was being interviewed by a bunch of Iraqi men
and they probably reminded her of her captors, she was probably either coached, or very terrified or a combination of both thats why I can't understand why the asses in the media are so quick to tear her a new one over statements she made while still under the care of iraqis

7. So much for what?
"They warned her not to talk with Americans or go to the Green Zone because it was infiltrated by insurgents, adding she might be killed if she cooperated with Americans, according to an account on the Monitor's website...."

The above sounds as much like care for her well-being as it does any sort of threat. If Jill still maintains that she was neither threatened or mistreated, I don't think that this report debunks anything. If it's true, it may only have been meant as a friendly (if that word can be applied to kidnappers) warning; presumably, the "insurgents" are not a monolith, and one group won't know just what another is up to.

Since these kidnappers wanted to release her unharmed, it would have been in their interests to warn her away from any activity that might have gotten her harmed or kidnapped by someone else. The alternative would have been to walk her up to a checkpoint.

10. Sure about what?
I'm only sure about the text I quoted, and am not vouching for its veracity.

9. It IS infiltrated by the insurgents
But I doubt they would try to kill her. Hopefully, she's on a plane out of that dump by now.

11. Yeah
There's a few bad guys in there. But you're right, there was no for them to harm her. All they are is spies. They don't have the means to carry out attacks or kidnappings inside the IZ.

12. I'm puzzled by the lack of follow-up press her release has received
It wasn't on the local news last night, for instance, and a search yields far less than one would expect. Will whisper campaigns vilify her?
