New voters being rejected (CA)
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/31/MNGC1I1ARQ1.DTL

Problems with a new statewide voter registration system could keep tens of thousands of Californians from showing up on election rolls this June.

More than 25 percent of the new registration forms sent to the state since Jan. 1 have been returned to the counties, most because they lack the driver's license, state identification or Social Security numbers now required by federal law

2. 43% of new voters in Los Angeles rejected!
I guess they can still vote provisional, but I would be curious to see the ratio of poor, minority, Democratic leaning voters being rejected, compared to the Repukes.

Things that make you go "Hmmmmmmm"

4. Low voter turnout favors republicans...
The strategy for Republicans has been to reduce overal voter turnout while getting past Republican voters to vote.

So if you are poor, of color, naturalized citizen, 18, single, chances are you will be disenfranchised in some way by Republican introduced voting regulations.

Republicans will never stop until they are forced out. they will eventually make this nation a one party "democracy"

5. why would they require a drivers license?
Lots of people are legal citizens of legal voting age and do not have drivers licenese. Many people in city simply don't drive or even own cars.

15. Maybe elsewhere
But here in California, just about every adult I know has a license, unless medically unfit or suspended by the court. Unfortunately, the transit situation here is abysmal. Where I live, one bus an hour runs by about a mile away, 12 hours a day, six days a week. If you have no license or vehicle, you are stuck. I live in the desert, so summertime temps of 110 and greater are common. Even in LA or San Diego, the transit is at best only fair. The best in the state is the Bay Area. But due to the California sprawl, to do anything efficiently, you MUST have a car or someone dedicated to driving you. Also, here in CA it is state law that you have either a Driver's License or the State ID card.

13. Floodgate of election day litigation
as the Volunteer Lawyers of People for the American Way - Election Protection swamp the California Courts. And this will NOT be that GOP bogey man of "Frivolous Litigation"

14. Let's hope the democratic party out here starts getting people the ID they
need so they can vote.. The money they are willing to spend to fight it, would be better spent making sure as many as possible CAN vote, than spent on lawyers AFTER Ahhhhnold is in office for his second term :grr:

18. The pukes in WA St
are trying to purge felons from voter registration for failing to have paid fines etc. Court ruled they couldn't do that because it amouted to a poll tax. Pukes appealing.
