(Bill) Clinton Wants Billions to Aid World's Poor
NEW YORK - Former President Clinton's attempt to marshal the resources of the world's wealthy and influential to solve global problems resulted in $2.5 billion in pledges during a signature conference held last year.

This year, he wants even more.

On Friday, the former president was joined by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as he discussed plans for the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative and from the September 2005 gathering.

Clinton described major strides in addressing global health challenges like HIV infection in Africa, saying the CGI had negotiated testing and treatment for 250,000 people and would probably reach a million or more by next September.

But he also warned of a growing crisis brought about by global climate change and said the U.S. had not responded adequately to the threat.

3. Probably true, but money for foreign aid isn't a big political winner
It should be, but it isn't. His status as an xpres, and the US' by extension, is enhanced abroad but I don't see that as a political win for her.

8. Why do guys like this
seem to think that 'world's wealthy and influential' have a roll to play in eliminating GLOBAL poverty, while at the same time, ignoring any role for them to eliminate poverty in their OWN domestic economies.

Why do these guys always miss the fact that the 'world's wealthy and influential' got that way through exploitation and creating conditions for poverty and then suggest that a 'voluntary' charity scheme would be a solution.

And THEN in the next breathe righteously demand that 'national revenues' that go to furnish citizens with social programs in their OWN countries, be compromised for the sake of writing a cheque to a 'Third World' country, so they can provide expensive infrastructure to these same 'exploitative' companies for export markets. Moreover, the western 'taxpayer' is then told to basically 'subsidize' the 'market' price that these companies fictiously augur when these 'transfers' are made, like in the case of pharmiceutical drugs.

This 'make poverty history' shit is just another form of 'looting'

9. How about a couple million to aid America's poor?
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 04:21 PM by TechBear_Seattle
I know that things around the world are worse than they are here in the states, but if we can spare billions to help the poor and needy in other countries, why can't we come up with money to help the poor and needy in this country?

12. I think they're included in "world." Furthermore, the dispartity between
the powerful in America and the powerless poor abroad is gives the powerful in America to create millions of powerless at home in America.

Lift up the poor everywhere and you lift up the poor everywhere.

You can never solve this problem by only helping Americans.

14. Just think, If we hadn't spent those billions and billions on Iraq
What we could do for poverty in the world.

But that would not be considered compassionate or conservative and it might bolster the image of America.
