Rice Warns Iran It Doesn't Have Much Time
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060602/D8I02D980.html

VIENNA, Austria (AP) - The United States warned Iran it will not have much time to respond once it is offered an international package of rewards to encourage it to suspend uranium enrichment, suggesting that the window could soon close and be replaced by penalties.

"It really needs to be within weeks," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told NBC's "Today" show, referring to the six-power package of perks or penalties aimed at halting Iran's enrichment activities.

In separate comments on National Public Radio, Rice suggested she was ready to meet her Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki, if Tehran agreed to suspend the activity that can be used to make nuclear arms and negotiate the details of the deal.

The package agreed on Thursday carries the threat of U.N. sanctions if Tehran remains defiant over what the West calls a rogue nuclear program that could produce a bomb. The United States, in a major policy shift, conditionally agreed this week to join those talks. It would be the first major public negotiations between the two countries in more than 25 years.

Yeah....like, 1?

4. Oh, Jesus, what are they trying to pull now?
And if they don't reply "within weeks", what then? Nuclear armageddon?

Why the rush? Is this another one of those "get out of Dodge" ultimatums? There's no immediate threat.
As evidenced by this:

Iran nuclear bomb 'in 10 years'

Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte told BBC Radio's Today programme Tehran could have a nuclear bomb ready between 2010 and 2015.

His comments come after key world powers agreed proposals in Vienna to persuade Tehran to halt its research.

The UK said the UN Security Council would act if Iran did not comply.

But on Friday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the Vienna agreement meant that force was ruled out.

6. Here's another, more sane perspective:
This comes from a firsthand account by DUer HL who attended the Pacific Conference on National Security's meeting yesterday. Senator Kerry was one of the speakers.

http://www.thehollywoodliberal.com/kerry_speech_pacific_conference.htm

Another point he made was that Iran is delighted with our "predicament in Iraq" because it increases their leverage against us. He said that Bush’s chief-of-staff Josh Bolten plans to use threats from Iran in the Republican’s election strategy, and they will try to create fear that if we don’t attack them they will attack us. Kerry is adamantly against us doing any kind of bombing of Iran. He said he accepted his responsibility for voting to use force in Iraq, and that we must not make the same mistake again.
He concluded by saying that according to the experts he has heard from, Iran is 5 to 10 years away from having nuclear capabilities so we have time for diplomacy, and that we need to repair what he called the gaping hole in the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.

7. what is wrong with Bushco?
What in hell are they doing?

Do they really think they can invade Iran? I mean, maybe nukes or an aerial bombing campaign, but without a draft, I doubt they'll be able to come up with the manpower to go in on the ground. As it is, they can't control Afghanistan and Iraq...so we're going to add another LARGER country to the list? :wtf:

Economy/Stock Market poised for an "adjustment"
Now this election thing just won't go away

28. August 30th
I know this is just hearsay, but at the daily war protest I attend regularly, a young man stopped by to show his support. He said a good friend of his was in the service (Marine, if I remember right, although I am not sure) and that he had just come back from Iraq. He was expecting to go back overseas on August 30.

To Iran.

All this retoric is for the sake of Americans. They will then tell Americans that Iran has not complied, and the folks I know will sadly agree that Iran needs to be bombed to hell to protect their own safety.

36. Sure, we can bomb Iran. The problem is "What Next?"
Consider these three points:

Iran has an army of 1,000,000 and advanced weaponry, including sophisticated anti-aircraft defense and anti-ship offensive systems. I've read elsewhere that Iran claims to have a cadre of 40,000 trained suicide bombers just waiting for the "green light" to martyrdom.

Muqtada al Sadr has threatened to attack American forces in Iraq if Iran is attacked.

133,000 U.S. troops still in Iraq. The instant Iran is attacked, they become potential POWs and, now that the Geneva Conventions have been declared "obsolete," will probably receive extremely harsh treatment at the hands of their captors, whether they be Iraqi or Iranian.

37. No deadline for Iran on nuclear offer, says Lavrov
Moscow, June 02: Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said today that Iran does not face a deadline to respond to an offer from six world powers for a package of rewards if it gives up suspect nuclear activities or punishment if it refuses, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Tehran "will not face a deadline to respond to the proposal of the six nations," he was quoted as saying. Lavrov said, however, that he expected Iran to give an answer within a few weeks after being presented with the offer.

Russia's top diplomat, who took part in talks in Vienna yesterday that led to the new international initiative aimed at resolving the Iranian nuclear standoff, said the UN Security Council could take up the issue once again if Iran rejects the offer.

A short statement issued by foreign ministers from the six powers and the European Union did not mention economic sanctions. The powers agreed privately, however, that Iran could face tough un security council sanctions if it fails to give up the enrichment of uranium and other disputed nuclear activities, US officials said.

Geez I loathe this administration. The part that is especially galling is that no sooner than the U.S. joins the negotiations she appears to be calling the shots. IMHO she is the very definition of an "Arrogant American". What an embarrassment to myself and my country.
