Rumsfeld defends troops' training, as Haditha investigation continues

SINGAPORE Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says U-S troops are "trained not to" massacre civilians.

In Singapore today, Rumsfeld refused to comment directly on the investigation of reports Marines slaughtered two-dozen Iraqi civilians in Haditha last fall.

Rumsfeld says "things that shouldn't happen, do happen" in combat. But he says "99-point-nine percent of our forces conduct themselves in an exemplary manner."

2. If Rumsfield had any honor at all he would be resigning over this.
First Abu Graib, then Fallujah and now Haditha. Three strikes and you are out, Rummy.

End the occupation. Yes, most military don't do these things. Yes these things happen which is why we shouldn't be there. Horrific things happen in occupations. They do. Why are we still there?

5. That's right, Rummy, the problem is not the troops' training;
the problem is YOUR war crimes, and those of your bosses.

7. NYT: Troops Respect Iraqis' Rights, Rumsfeld Says
By MICHAEL R. GORDON
Published: June 2, 2006
SINGAPORE, June 2 — Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld today defended the training of American troops and insisted that the overwhelming majority respect the rights of Iraqi civilians.

"We know that 99.9 per cent of our forces conduct themselves in an exemplary manner," said Mr. Rumsfeld. "We also know that in conflicts things that shouldn't happen do happen."

Mr. Rumsfeld's comments came amid a growing furor in Iraq over reports that American marines killed 24 Iraqis in the town of Haditha last year. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki charged on Thursday that American forces had regularly attacked Iraqi civilians and said that the Iraqi government would take this conduct into account in determining how long American troops should remain in Iraq

Mr. Rumsfeld declined to respond directly to Mr. Maliki's assertions, saying that he had not read them. He also declined to discuss the specifics of the Haditha deaths, saying that he did not want to interfere in the ongoing investigations. (continued)

17. This loathsome man
is so far out of touch with reality it's mind boggling. Vast majority? We have a pResident who lies to get us into the war, who wants to use torture, who kidnaps people and labels them "enemy combatants" and denies them access to an attorney, and he presumes to pontificate on how moral we are in executing this illegal war. Our country has lost the right to judge others, due to the enormous violations of human rights we have violated. Why does this man still have a job? Why does * still have a job?
