Program Will Operate Under Stronger Administrative Standards

POSTED: 1:52 pm EDT June 5, 2006
UPDATED: 2:44 pm EDT June 5, 2006

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University announced Monday that the school's lacrosse team will resume play in the fall. University officials said the program will continue under stronger administrative standards.

Possible violations include underage drinking, disorderly conduct and harassment. Student-athletes who commit a violation will first be given counseling and community service. A second violation will lead to a three-game suspension. A third violation will bring forth a season-long suspension.

Students who fail to notify the head coach and the athletic director of a violation within 24 hours will be immediately suspended from the team.

" … As I wrestled with this issue, I decided that Duke should only resume men's lacrosse if we made a clear statement of the conduct we expect of the players going forward; if the players made a commitment to live by these expectations; and if we had a strong oversight mechanism to monitor the situation. These conditions have now been met to my satisfaction," President Richard H. Brodhead announced Monday in an e-mail to the Duke community.

stronger administrative standards.

Yikes

What will all those "young men" with silver spoons in their mouths do, with their spare time?

2. not tough enough, IMO....
...I don't think the same "men" ought to even be allowed back on that team. And the new 'standards' aren't tough enough.

I'd give them ONE warning and send them to mandatory drug and alcohol abuse counselling (THAT is their chance to LEARN)
Second offense, and they're off the team - permenantly
Third offense, they're removed from the college - permenantly

The kid glove treatment isn't going to work with these guys...I'm afraid these new standards are not tough enough.

3. The reality is most of these "young men" are from a different class
Kind of like the Bushes. These people are upper class snobs, well on their way to the Harvard or Yale law school and to run daddy's corporation.

Rules mean nothing to them

They have the "GOLDEN RULE"

Which simply put is, "He who has the Gold, makes the rule."

4. ...and we don't NEED any more spoilt brats running things..
...but if we keep treating them with limp noodles and kid gloves, and letting them get away with shit no one else can (just like the Bushes), we're just generating more of them. I'd be horrified if one of these shitheads became Pres one day. But, it's more likely one of them will than a kid who behaves him/herself and follows the rules. Sad to say but true.

5. Isn't this similar to "Ethics Classes" the Congress/Senate now to attend?
Besides, these Duke guys ARE "athletes"...and we all know what "privileges" (and "gifts") college and "pro" athletes regularly are excessively given, and "expect" as entitlements of their athletic superiority/prowess.

Why should THIS be any different. Even IF the Players DID, what Powers-That-Be say they MAY not have...they ARE Duke Athletes. Good gosh, what other outcome COULD'VE possibly come for "mishandling" of a poor non-white woman (triple-negative in the world of the Privileged).
